Beef Bacon

Everyone knows that trying to make bacon out of "healthier" things generally doesn't end well. I have yet to find turkey bacon that's worth eating, and while you can find some acceptable veggie sausage, soy bacon is on the level of tofu hot dogs: Abomination before Man and God. But what about beef bacon? Beef hot dogs are the best kind of hot dogs, perhaps there's something here?

Short answer: Yes, there's something here. It's nearly as good as the real thing. The meat's a little less tender, so the chewiness isn't quite right, but the smoky, salty, meaty flavor is damn yummy. I wouldn't go out of my way to choose it over pork bacon, but if that was the option, I'd attack it with the same fervor as I would proper bacon.

(Also noteworthy: While the specific brand I bought isn't kosher, the existance of beef bacon means there must be kosher bacon out there somewhere. And I'll need to check, but this may be an acceptable substitute for V if I have a gaming night recipe that calls for bacon, since she doesn't eat pork.)

We usually had kosher beef bacon growing up, and it was quite good.

There definitely is a brand that makes it. I think it's one of the major national kosher brands, but can't remember which. I DO remember that it wasn't called bacon or even beef bacon (though the turkey next to it was called Turkey Bacon so who knows why).

Also, duck bacon works pretty well. D'artangan sells it in NYC region upscale markets.

Duck bacon, you say? Now there's something worth hunting down. Smoked duck is a thing of deliciousness.
