Beef Bacon
Sep. 4th, 2010 11:28 amEveryone knows that trying to make bacon out of "healthier" things generally doesn't end well. I have yet to find turkey bacon that's worth eating, and while you can find some acceptable veggie sausage, soy bacon is on the level of tofu hot dogs: Abomination before Man and God. But what about beef bacon? Beef hot dogs are the best kind of hot dogs, perhaps there's something here?
Short answer: Yes, there's something here. It's nearly as good as the real thing. The meat's a little less tender, so the chewiness isn't quite right, but the smoky, salty, meaty flavor is damn yummy. I wouldn't go out of my way to choose it over pork bacon, but if that was the option, I'd attack it with the same fervor as I would proper bacon.
(Also noteworthy: While the specific brand I bought isn't kosher, the existance of beef bacon means there must be kosher bacon out there somewhere. And I'll need to check, but this may be an acceptable substitute for V if I have a gaming night recipe that calls for bacon, since she doesn't eat pork.)
