This isn't so much a meme as a thought exercise my friend [livejournal.com profile] gaudium_et_spes came up with, but nonetheless...

An interesting thought exercise...
Suppose for a moment that you were captain of a starship. For whatever reason, the Earth Alliance / Rebel Alliance / Federation / whatever traveled through time / space / alternate reality to choose you to captain one of their vessels. In addition to your service as captain, however, you would be required to choose your officers from amongst your friends. They would provide all the skills training necessary, so your chief engineer wouldn't need to know anything about engineering. Here are the jobs you might need to fill:

First Officer: [livejournal.com profile] drlizardo. After three years of having essentially that sort of teamwork running the FireHazards, I know that she works really well as a counterpoint to me.

Sensor Officer (aka ``The Ensign''): [livejournal.com profile] edgehopper The ensign is getting trained to be a captain someday. Everyone who knows the general histories of edgehopper and I will understand this.

Pilot: [livejournal.com profile] katertoticus who wins for both best sense of direction and ability to keep cool under extreme pressure.

Armory Officer: [livejournal.com profile] chantal1382 can apparently be trusted with weapons. This is rather critical.

Science Officer: [livejournal.com profile] ivy03, as the science officer needs to have drive while still having a sense of humor about it, the ability to deal with a lot of the boring crap for the good stuff, and the chutzpah to convince us all that the latest microbes she found were important.

Chief Engineer: [livejournal.com profile] jethrien--She's good at solving problems, she organizes people well, and she'd be far tooo distracting on the bridge.

Chief Medical Officer: [livejournal.com profile] hutubachick, who I considered making Pliot so I could make fun of her for driving too slowly. But she's got both the empathy required for good beside manner, the attention to detail required for medical work, and the bossiness to make the rest of the crew obey doctor's orders.

Ship's Councilor: [livejournal.com profile] gaudium_et_spes, whose empathy has always impressed me.

Will I never escape the science label? Le sigh. Who does this make me, T'pol?

At least I get to be on your space ship.
