Shredder and his goons are at it again, and they’re gathering up the scattered pieces of Krang’s robot body from all over New York City (and Dimension X) for some sinister purpose.
A love song to the TMNT arcade beat-em-ups, and to Turtles in Time in particular. You can have up to six people playing simultaneous co-op, as the four turtles, Splinter, and April (with Casey Jones as a bonus character to unlock). You get super moves, but instead of draining your health, they have their own power meter that fills when you attack or use the “meditate” move. There are a huge collection of available attack combos, including the “puny god” and “screen toss” moves from Turtles in Time. If a character dies in multiplayer mode, you have a limited time when the other character(s) can go revive them (but you also still also have extra lives). As each character earns points (for beating enemies, cleaning stage objectives or getting collectibles) they gain levels, giving them additional health, power bars and super attacks. There are 16 stages, which you can replay to get achievements and find secrets.
The plot is all right out of the 80s cartoon, as are the character designs and most of the minor characters. (Tokka and Rahzar and a special appearance by Super-Shredder were the only non-cartoon characters I noted.) That bit about Shredder collecting the lost pieces of Krang’s robot body for some nefarious purpose? That’s pretty much the entire thing.
I played through the entire game in about two and a half hours on Chill mode with Ben, Dave and ARR. We only really needed our extra lives on the last stage. I played more later with Jethrien and ARR and it didn’t go quite as well, but on Chill mode it’s still manageable even if you aren’t great at video games. Some of the stage challenges are easier with more players, and some (getting through without damage or without hitting obstacles) are surely easier with fewer.
Overall: I hadn’t quite realized that I wanted more TMNT beat-em-up, but I did, and here it is, and it’s exactly what you’d want from that.
