Hawkeye (Disney+, Season 1) – Delightful, mostly because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Avengers musical was amazing. The use of Hawkeye being hard of hearing (he’s deaf in the comics) and the totally reasonable explanation for that are great. Yalena is such fun. I’m looking forward to seeing Kate Bishop in a team-up movie down the line.
Russian Doll (Netflix, Season 2) – Another round of sci-fi mindfuck, only this time it’s Quantum Leap instead of Groundhog Day as Nadia tries to fix her family’s past. I actually rewatched season 1 before I started into this, because it’s been a few years and I suspected I’d forgotten some nuance. I had, and also the show is a lot stronger without being directly against The Good Place. I love the fact that Nadia isn’t just Jewish, but aggressively Jewish—a trait that apparently carries over from Lyonne’s own life. This is an interesting counterpoint to Alan being casually, quietly bisexual. (interestingly, between the character voices and the sound design, Jethrien can’t stand to be in the same room while I’m watching this—apparently the sound combination really grates on her.) Ultimately this show is a purgatory story, and despite the sci-fi elements it’s the sort of time nonsense that must have an intelligence behind it. There are time-loop stories that are clearly values-neutral and can be explained by spec-fic science, but the loops of the first season and the travel in the second are clearly intended to teach lessons to Nadia and Alan and force them to grow as people. I doubt they’ll make a third season, but if they do, I’ll only accept it if it ends with Nadia creating the loops that made herself, in proper nested Russian Doll fashion.
Moon Knight (Disney+, Season 1) – Steven is having a bad weekend, as he keeps losing time and waking up in strange places, and now he’s hearing voices. Oscar Isaac proves his ability to have amazing chemistry with basically anyone, by having amazing chemistry with himself. And we loved the hippo, everybody thinks she’s the absolute best.
Our Flag Means Death (HBOMax, Season 1) – From the man would brought us the bisexual vampire morons show comes the gay pirate morons show. It’s got an extremely similar feel, and it’s another show where you can tell everyone involved is having such a good time. Some of the episodes are stronger than others; I preferred the lighthearted tone to the dark tone. They clearly expected to get their second season, given the cliffhanger mess they left off on.
