My PS2 dates back before 2009, when I started my current recordkeeping system. I got it in 2002 along with a copy of Final Fantasy 10. On my old log system, I see a lot of time spent on Dynasty Warriors games, interspersed with things like Karaoke Revolution, the two Katamari games, and long playthroughs of games like Wild ARMS 3-5, Suikoden 5, Disgaea 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy 12. At least 20 different titles are represented. Starting in 2009, I have logs for 34 games and over 600 hours of play time, but the total play time counter could easily be twice that.

The PS2 spent basically a decade as my primary console: The backward compatibility meant I played or replayed a lot of PS1 titles on it, the ease of local multiplayer meant it saw a lot of time with Jethrien or other friends, it had a few titles that made good party games, and it had all the solid JRPG series that I was interested in. Oh, and it doubled as my DVD player. I went through several handhelds (this was the GBA -> DS era) and those tended to be my pick-up-and-play games, but my central game system was the PS2. (I actually purchased a second PS2, though I don’t recall exactly when, and all of my later playtime was on a slimline model.)

I got the PS3 for Christmas in 2010, but the transition was slow (and the two systems saw a lot of side-by-side use) because I had a huge backlog of PS2 games at that point. (I only added one game to the PS2 backlog after 2010, and that was because Mithrigil insisted I play Digital Devil Saga.) I got an Action Replay for the PS2 in 2011, which spurred me on to play a lot of those backlogged games over the following two years. The backlog for PS1 and PS2 games was down to a handful by the end of 2014; and by the end of 2017 Shadow Hearts: Covenant was the only thing left.

I think Wild ARMS 3 logged the most hours for a single play-through (60+), but I played 30-40 hours of most earlier-era games, and 20-30 with cheats in later years was fairly standard. I played Final Fantasy 10 at least three full times, so I suspect it wins for most time total.

I’ve had a lot more system turnover in the 2010s than I did in the 2000s; that’s probably some combination of having more money, less time, and more things competing for my interest.

As noted, I got the PS3 for Christmas in 2010 and since then I logged 21 games for it, most of them by mid-2015. That includes logs for around 500 hours of playtime and 100 hours more than Jethrien played. I haven’t added any games to the PS3 backlog since 2015; and virtually all of my PS3 playtime 2016-2019 was co-op games with Jethrien. (Four of the five games I played on the system since 2015 were co-op; or eight out of the total 21. These included four Lego games, two Warriors games, Katamari Forever, and Child of Light.) As with the 3DS seeing less use and a shorter lifespan than the 3DS, the PS3 saw less overall use and a shorter lifespan than the PS2, around 4.5 years as a primary system and another 4 seeing secondary use.

In its heyday, the PS3 took over as the “long play-throughs of rpgs” system, with the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, two Disgaea games and Enchanted Arms all clocking in over 40 hours. NieR and Drakengard 3 rounded out the games of real note. There were far fewer games out of my “comfort zone” that I bothered to get for the PS3—mainstream developers for the US audience had left me behind on action games, the Karaoke Revolution/Rock Band trend had ended, and used games sold at a higher premium that I was less willing to take chances on. I also had the big backlog of titles from earlier systems and didn’t want to spend money making it bigger.

There are nominally three games still on my PS3 backlog as of this writing: Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness (which I played a third of); the Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (which I replayed the first segment of FFX on), and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (which I remember starting the first chapter of). I’m hoping to play, review and/or cull them in the next few months and properly close my backlog on this system as well.

I’m not expecting the PS4 to have a comparable lifespan to even the PS3—I got it in mid-2018, I’ve logged 8 games and 225 hours, and I have 4 games backlogged with only a couple more I have any interest in buying. Having a gaming PC makes some of the difference; there are relatively few exclusives to the system and it’s sometimes easier to play on Steam or on the Switch. For that matter, I currently have no plans of buying a PS5—my game system choices in the 2020s are more likely to be driven by ARR’s interests than my own.

Oh, you didn't finish Disgaea? I remembered you liking that one.

Do we count all the hours and hours of exercise videos I've done on these? I guess if we didn't have a Playstation we would have needed a DVD player and also a Roku box...
