Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (PS4)
Sep. 7th, 2019 02:39 pmChaos and Cosmos are gone, but the heroes of the various Final Fantasy games have been drawn back into a strange world out of time (along with some new faces). A goddess named Materia and a god named Spiritus both want the mantle of ruler of this world, a world that thrives on the energy generated by combat.
This game features three-on-three battles, rather than the one-on-one that I got used to in the PSP games. These are a lot more chaotic, and add a bunch of strategy that the PSP games didn’t have—assisting your allies, divvying up summoning duties, and needing to be very careful for your foes’ teammates when you land a HP strike (and therefore deplete your own bravery). I’m generally less wild about having two CPU characters that I have to rely on (they’re generally pretty dumb), though I’ll admit that this is an interesting approach to changing up the game’s formula.
They got rid of a lot of the rpg elements and the ability to build up or equip your characters—you can buy new outfits or weapons, but they seem to be purely cosmetic. Fighting many battles raises your “rank”, but this seems to correspond only to the special attack choices you have unlocked (you can only equip a few at a time) and the difficulty of the battles you have the option of facing.
At first the “story” mode is just a series of cutscenes you need to unlock by playing the classic fighting mode over and over. Then there are actual “story” battles, though it’s nowhere near as involved as the previous two games—they’re more like boss battle versions of what you’re playing in the regular mode.
All that said, the emphasis here is clearly that they want you to play online PvP. Lots of it. You know what I don’t enjoy? Online PvP, but even moreso, team-based online PvP. Screw that!
Overall: While I appreciate them changing up the formula from the first two games, they cut out the stuff I liked (rpg elements) in favor of making it a more pure fighting game that you can play online. I may watch the story mode cutscenes on Youtube.
