Six kids are living relatively normal lives, as much as rich kids in LA can do. Then they discover that their parents are supervillains.

Turns out that my Sprint phone contract gives me free access to a with-commercials Hulu account. What better way to use that then to watch the adaptation of a comics series I really enjoyed?

I feel like this is a common comment I make with Marvel properties, but: The casting director deserves all the props, here.

They flesh out the parents and their drama more than in the original comics, likely to capitalize on the strength of the adult actors and not put all the spotlight and heavy lifting on the kids. Also, I’d imagine it kept the special effects budget down. Honestly, the glitter effect on Karolina is a little cheesy, which is an odd counterpoint to how good some of the tech effects and the Staff of One are.

I feel like the various romantic triangles got resolved earlier than the did in the comics—I feel like Karolina coming out was much later in the original story.

I’m going to guess that Jonah is an alien, and that what’s at the bottom of the hole is either his ship, or a nest of his people that he wants to bring to the surface. It’s unclear whether he’s in this for conquest or just escape—which is probably for the best at this point, leaving it nebulous. For that matter, it’s clear that he has deeper plans and that the parents are at least partially playing into them. Victor will also clearly be back, likely as some sort of monstrosity. It’ll be interesting to see how many “sides” there end up being by the end of season two, given that the parents are divided but pretty much everyone is against Jonah at this point.

Overall: This was entertaining and has potential going forward. We’ll see? Season two had actually dropped by the time I’d finished watching season one. I’m going to watch it, but I think I’ll give it a little time.
