Humble Extra Life Bundle 2017

chuckroKingsway – This reminded me mostly of Knights of Pen and Paper, as it’s a click-to-play exploration-based pseudo-rpg, only it’s much more deadly (you’re expected to die, then use the “gems” earned from that character to power up later ones), and the interface it deliberately reminiscent of Windows 95. This was the game from this set which held my interest for the longest and that I might return to at some point; it’s an entertaining little casual game.
Majesty Gold HD – This is a strange sort of game, sort of real-time city construction crossed with exploration/adventure. It’s very hard to actually manage the combat and exploration, though, because you can’t issue complicated orders to your characters and you can’t easily designate things for your guards to, say, guard. I may try Majesty 2 at some point to see if anything is improved, but I found the real-time aspect of it significantly less fun to play than a similar turn-based system would be.
PAC-MAN™ CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2 – This ain’t your daddy’s Pac-Man. There are a host of new tricks and turns, including ghosts that you can bounce off of until you “anger” them, trains of ghosts, nested levels and point combos. If you’re expecting classic Pac-Man you’ll be disappointed, because only the basic themes are kept, but there are some fun twists to it.
Leviathan Warships - A tactical simulation game where you give orders to steer and attack enemy warships in ten-second rounds. Not my thing.
Rain World - This is an exploration-based platformer/survival game, in which you play as a little ferret-like creature roaming strange, dark ruins looking for food and shelter. I didn’t find the controls terribly intuitive or the concept particularly engrossing, but I suspect that’s a matter of personal taste.
This bundle also included Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition, which makes it my third or fourth copy of that.
Overall: Some bundles seem like there are several games that will interest me but end up disappointing, and I think this is an example thereof. Mostly, it sat on my backlog list because there was a bunch of “Oh, I might get in the mood eventually, but not now…” going on. I enjoyed Kingsway, I tried the rest, I’m done.
