When she proves more interested in fighting monsters than being the princess of Mewni, Star Butterfly is sent to Earth as an exchange student, where she lives with the Diaz family and has normal teenage misadventures…that she solves with narwhal blasts and laser-vision puppies.
This is adorable with a Steven Universe sort of vibe, but a little less continuity-heavy (at least early on) and a little more wacky/goofy. The influence of Ren and Stimpy on modern cartoon animation continues to be clear.
For some reason, I really, really didn’t want Star and Marco to get romantically involved. I love the idea of them as best friends / evil-fighting partners. I really like her being his wingman as he tries to talk to the girl he has a crush on. I like the idea of teenagers of opposite gender sharing space and feelings and not having to make it romantic. (Which is not to say I dislike romance. I totally ship Stevonnie, for instance. But I really like the platonic Star/Marco vibe.) By early in the second season, they’re actively namechecking “Starco” as a thing, and they build the potential romance as a thing throughout, which means that’ll likely be a center point to the third season. Sigh.
Season two gets much more into continuity and focuses episodes much more on the supporting/antagonist characters. There are episodes where Star and Marco don’t even appear, because the focus is on Ludo or Buff Frog. Where Steven Universe gives you dribbles of the worldbuilding and backstory over time, this spends more of the ongoing plot building out the current/new monster threats that Star has to deal with now. We're not learning about the nature of the multiple dimensions or depth of Mewnie heritage unless it matters right that moment to someone's scheme.
Overall: Honestly, I think I enjoyed the first season more—it was a little more gag-heavy and goofy, and less focused on an overall story. I’ll likely watch the third season to see what happens, but the initial flare wore off.
