- Sparticleman hosted a draft of the new Magic the Gathering comedy set, Unstable. For reference, the last time I played Magic (that I remember) was his bachelor party, where we drafted Innestrad. I built a green/red deck around dice-rolling (which became a host/augment deck by default, because that's what calls for dice much more than contraptions do) and it worked reasonably well. Artifact destruction was the most valuable ability, given other folks were using contraption decks. Honestly, I found this comedy set to be much closer to “real” Magic than either of the previous ones—goofy themes, but more real playable rules.

- Spending time with an infant and a two-year-old is delightful...and then I give them back to their parents and get to sleep all night.

- On Sunday, we took ARR to “Tours for Fours” at MoMA, which was a lovely use of a morning. The tour itself was an hour long, then you're free to wander the museum, and they have an art lab for kids too. The art lab was the biggest hit—ARR could have spent two hours there if we hadn't wanted to get lunch.

- Lunch was northern Chinese food at Xi'an Famous Foods, a specialty noodle place. I'm glad I went for non-spicy (I think the “regular” heat level would have been too much, given that Jethrien's “mild” was almost too spicy for me.) ARR wasn't crazy about it, but he was a good sport and ate lots of noodles. Also, both the chrysanthemum and jasmine teas are lovely.

- Advantages of doing karaoke at home: No need to travel or find a babysitter, near-infinite song selection, it's free. Disadvantages of doing karaoke at home: It still requires keeping ARR entertained, I'm still the host for purposes of food and beverages, and without a songbook, I get paralyzed about what to sing.

- A reminder to myself: The family platter from Gypsy Grill that is purported to feed five people will, in fact, feed at least seven. Possibly ten.

- On Monday, I made my first try at cooking quail—which only takes 20-25 minutes to cook at 500 degrees. (And the glaze can just go on at the beginning, because of that.) It tastes mostly like dark-meat chicken, and the tiny birds are adorable, if hard to manage on your plate.

- The same trip to 99 Ranch got a rabbit, some thin-sliced veal, and a couple other food experiments. Should be interesting to see how those turn out.

Thin sliced lamb, not veal.
