Lumberjanes Volume 7: A Bird’s Eye View – The oldest former attendees of the camp (now a council that officially runs it) are stopping by for an inspection. Just in time for Scouting Lad Barney, a bunch of super-powered kittens, and a giant roc to all show up to cause chaos. The overarcing plot resumes, and things remain very trans-friendly. (“This camp is for hardcore lady-types. It's up to you to decide if that applies to you.”)
Rat Queens Volume 4: High Fantasies – They time-skip a few years, the Queens are back together and new problems have arisen. (This is the first arc of “volume two” of the series, with a new artist and hopefully fewer schedule problems.) Braga gets updated to a regular member, which is awesome. The Four Daves have split up, which is sad. Violet’s brother makes repeated appearances, which is annoying.
Ms. Marvel Volume 7: Damage Per Second - In a clever twist, the Wilson tries to give Ms. Marvel an opponent who is unpunchable, a sentient computer virus taught to be a jerk by the internet. I’m middling on how well that gets resolved (and she finds something to punch anyway), but it’s a cute arc and I appreciate the continued depth of the side characters. There’s an entire issue dedicated to Bruno in Wakanda, learning to deal with his new disabilities.
Giant Days Volume 3 - Chaos continues in the lives of Esther, Daisy and Susan, as they tackle all-nighters, student council elections, the outdoors, and many romantic problems.
Spell On Wheels - Self-contained, adorable story about three modern-day witches hunting down the person who broke into their home and stole their stuff. It’s by Kate Leth and carries her usual brand of humor.
Sex Criminals Volume 4: Fourgy! - What happens when new relationship energy runs out for a relationship built around having sex, freezing time and robbing banks? Angst. Angst is what happens.
Clean Room Volume 1: Immaculate Conception - I bought this knowing nothing about it beyond Gail Simone’s name on the cover. It turns out, it’s an eldritch horror story, very much Gail Simone doing her best impression of Grant Morrison. I’m debating about buying the rest of the series.
Overall: Pretty much everything in here gets a “recommended” rating, though you can start at the beginning of any of the ongoing series and enjoy the whole way through.
