The new pilots are arranged, Shiro is back, and they’re taking the galaxy back from the Galra!
Splitting these 6 episodes off from “season three” was definitely the right move, as after all the back and forth about Keith and the black lion, it was good to artificially add “distance” to Keith leaving to train with the Blade of Maumora and Shiro resuming command. It made it feel like there was time and more events between the two seasons, even if there weren't really. The hanging plot of “something has been done to Shiro” from season 3 wasn’t addressed, and I’m going to guess it wasn’t Hagar’s plot, given that she didn’t use it when she tried to blow up Voltron in the finale. So that’s still out there. (I actually briefly thought Shiro was a disguised Zarkon after he re-took command of the black lion. Guess not.)
Matt's crush on Allura is clearly a reference / homage to Pidge's crush on her in the original series. (I have to wonder if the extreme comedic use of Matt in episode 3 was a reaction to the incredible angst of the search for him in episode 2.)
I am 95% certain that the three ships Lotor is building (one of which he has, one of which his traitor minions have, and one of which hasn’t yet been built) will eventually be used to form Gladiator Voltron.
And the bit with the cow, while utterly incongruous, was so delightful.
Overall: I could have gone for a somewhat longer season here, but this show continues to be such fun.
