chuckroThe main plotline about the Cluster from season 2 is wrapped up, then we have a season where Jasper is the real concern; then we get much more into a saga with the Diamonds, rulers of the Homeworld Gems.
I appreciated that Season 3 actually ends like a proper season—the delineation between the first three seasons is rather rough. Of course, the series by this point is intended to be watched straight through, in order, never missing episodes; to the point that nothing would really make sense otherwise.
Third season’s focus on Pearl makes it much more clear that she was totally in love with Rose. It’s not even subtle. It seems that once they got Garnet’s alien lesbian halves past the censors, they just ran with it.
Season 4 continues the intense continuity-driven nature of the later series, running half a dozen episodes together as a basically continual narrative. The theme of season 4 is Steven's relationship with Rose, and how much of her he effectively “is”, and why she turned into him. Which, y'know, is pretty much the same internal monologue any kid with an absent parent would have, just with a few bits about magical space rocks added.
For that matter, even if the narrative tends to still be nebulous about Steven's age because he still looks like a kid (he's presumably still 14, though it's possible they skipped a birthday and he's 15 now), his teen angst is on point. He's clearly matured from the first season, though he also still has some very childish behaviors. (Then again, Sadie is referred to as an adult—I figured she and Lars were 16-ish—and she also hits some of those childish buttons from time to time.) Age and maturity tend to be flexible with the needs of any given episode.
Overall: It irks me that Season 4 ends on a cliffhanger, but I think I'm going to wait until Season 5 finishes airing before I hunt down and watch that. This series has turned into something made for marathoning.
