After the team defeated Zarkon, Shiro vanished. Now, they need to find a new paladin to pilot the black lion so that Voltron can continue to defend the galaxy from the threat of the Golra.

I was NOT expecting them to actually go through with the great lion swap-o-roonie, or for Shiro to stay gone for more than an episode. They did a decent job explaining it, though, and establishing it as the new status quo.

I loved the alternate universe appearance by “Sven”, and especially the bit where he needed to go to “space hospital”. This would make no sense at all to someone not intimately familiar with the original series, of course; but hey, I am, so...

For that matter, I love that they managed to pull together a clear backstory that explains Hagar, and why Lotor is much more prettyboy than the standard Golra (presumably he’s half-Altean, which also hints to a bunch of his plans—presumably both he and Hagar can activate Altean tech, the same way Allura and Coran can).

Clearly, something has been done to Shiro and there’s a greater plot, here. I’m guessing brainwashing that will cause him to betray the team, but clearly we’ll see. (I half-expected the episode with his escape to end with a The Prisoner-style “it was all a holodeck / trap / hallucination” twist.) They've clearly set up the comet-ship to be a threat that can contend with Voltron's power level, and the alternate universe / quintessence source as the macguffin. And now that they finally have all five bayards, presumably Voltron will gain a new weapon or three.

Overall: This was only a 7-episode half-season and I marathoned it in two days. But the series as a whole continues to delight.
