As it fell right at the beginning of ARR’s spring break and we had plans to rent a car for adventures anyway, we decided to check out Lunacon. An hour from our house made for an easy day trip, and the listed activities put it about on par with Philcon for activity. So that’s how we spent Saturday.

I was generally underwhelmed. The attendance was sparse and they seemed generally disorganized. Several of the kids track activities were outright cancelled. The high points:

• The Boogie Knights were there! I saw their morning concert (Jethrien and ARR came for three songs before he’d had enough and wanted to go), and then I monopolized Xavcat for the rest of the afternoon. I hadn’t seen her since Thanksgiving, so that was utterly delightful.

• The games room had a very nice selection of stuff. ARR only wanted to try a couple of games, so after an amusing ten minutes with Mad Libs Dice, we pulled the Rampage board game and played it twice. It has way more rules and complications than it really needs (many of which we ignored), but the main idea is that you need to maneuver your dragon around the board, smashing buildings and eating the people-meeples that fall out. So that was fun, and we could have definitely spent more time there under other circumstances.

• While there were only a dozen dealers, they had solid wares. I got the latest volume of Saga, a tpb of The Secret Loves of Geek Girls, a copy of Batman Fluxx (which ARR and I successfully played this morning), and some spice mixes from Auntie Arwen, the very-charismatic spice merchant.

• The crafting room proved moderately successful in keeping ARR entertained, in that he was able to make a Batman-themed mini top hat, and there was also an exciting carpet that he could drive the Rescue Bots around on and no one minded them having adventures under the tables.

• A little girl named Rowen, whose parents run Ro-Con, was staked out in the hall near her parents’ table with an assortment of toys, and was happy to share with ARR in exchange for access to the Rescue Bots he’d brought.

Overall: I’m not sure we’ll return, at least not until ARR is older. But there was enough entertainment to make the day worthwhile, and I consider an afternoon with Xavcat worth the price of admission.
