Extremely Random Assorted Observations
Nov. 23rd, 2015 06:36 pm- Me: ARR, what are you doing? ARR: I’m doing something good that you would like!
- My parents came out last week to help me while Jethrien was travelling, and it made so much difference, I can’t even say. My mom was out Monday and Tuesday; then my dad on Thursday and Friday. Them being there in the morning meant I could take a shower, and being there in the evening meant time to get chores done and dinner made. Though we learned that if ARR knows his grandparents are picking him up early from school, he doesn’t take a nap because he’s too excited.
- ARR also spent the week climbing into my bed at 5:30am and kicking me in the head while asking every two minutes if it was time to get up. We will be adjusting wake-up policies going forward. (But he does still take fabulous weekend naps if one of us naps with him. Saturday was much more pleasant when we were both so worn out from the morning that we napped for 2.5 hours.)
- I got bacon-cheddar bratwurst while Jethrien was travelling, and while they weren’t safe for ARR, my dad and I got to try them. I enjoyed them but worried they might be “too many adjectives” sausage. He thought they made great brats ‘n eggs.
- I have introduced ARR to salmon with honey-mustard-garlic-oil and to imitation crabmeat stuffing. This has led to several trips to the supermarket where he requested salmon because “it’s my favorite.” He was being mischievous yesterday and not eating his dinner, until we pointed out that the stuffing is really just three things he loves--crab, rolls and butter mixed together.
- I had our air ducts and dryer vent cleaned on Wednesday, and apparently they really, really needed it. There was another huge load of lint in the dryer vent, and the AC ducts were full of gunk. $500 for the full job—not cheap, but I’d still recommend NJ Duct Busters because I thought the guy was really thorough, really good at explaining what he was doing, and also fast and efficient.
- The new Dora the Explorer exhibit at Liberty Science Center was a huge hit with ARR—we probably spent an hour there on Saturday. (There’s a spaceship, a pirate ship, a garden, a car that you “fuel” with little balls, a vet’s office with stuffed animals, and a slide.) The thing I found particularly interesting was there were numerous signs reminding parents that children need an hour of active play each day. Thinking about my son and how antsy he gets after barely an hour of sit-down time, I had to wonder about what other parents do all day. If I was actively trying to get ARR less than an hour of active play, I might have to tie him down!
- We made our first attempt at a full-length movie with ARR on Sunday (in our basement, not a theater) with “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh”, which he loved. He also screamed when amused or excited, indicating that we’re still a ways from going to a proper movie theater.
- It took two tries, but I got a proper hanger and hung up the broadsword I’ve had since college. I’ve only been meaning to do that for more than a decade.
