Slow Foods

I don’t remember how old I was when I realized the kind of foods my father snacked on all had something in common: They took a lot of time to eat for the amount of food you actually got. Whole oranges and unshelled nuts were common choices. My dad tends to take the “sitting on the couch, snacking and multitasking media” approach to relaxing, so a snack that occupied his hands over a long period of time made sense.

I suspect the fact that some significant portion of my media-consumption time is video games (which occupy my hands) and the fact that my metabolism is still pretty impressive (so I can eat somewhat less healthily than I “should” and still fit in my pants) are why I haven’t really developed this habit. I feel like I actively try to avoid foods that take a really long time to eat because I need my hands and/or my attention for other purposes.

This musing was brought to you by a packet of unshelled pistachios and a conveniently-timed vendor visit.
