Simple Things

chuckroWhen we moved into the new house, there were a number of minor things that we got replaced or repaired—we got new carpets, we had the bannister secured, we got some drains unclogged, etc. Some major, some minor, but all things that we considered “critical”. Not everything was perfect, but we were laying out a lot of money at one time and didn’t want to shell out for things that we could live with.
One of those things was the toilet seats: Neither of them stay up on their own. I consider being able to pee standing up one of the only non-societally-imposed differences between men and women, and appreciate it as such. And I didn’t consider exactly how much having to hold the seat up with one hand would irk me.
Yesterday, we had to go to Home Depot anyway to get some specialty lightbulbs and recycle some batteries. (The backup battery for our phone / Fios connection had been beeping for a week until Verizon sent a replacement. Oy.) I had to be convinced by Jethrien (who knows this annoys me) to actually buy a new “no slam” toilet seat, and I justified it only because it also has a potty flap that ARR can use.
There is no reason this should make me as happy as it does. It’s totally meaningless and arguably a waste of time and money to replace something that worked for its stated purpose. And yet, I can’t help but feel like my life has been improved.
