We stayed at Times House Bed and Breakfast, which I would recommend to fans of Bed & Breakfasts. It’s conveniently located in the middle of the downtown touristy area, next door to a wine shop that does tastings and down the street from all of the tchotchke shops and nice restaurants. (We stayed in the Serenity room, for reference). In a neat twist, as they don’t have a central dining or sitting area, they set up breakfast in your room the night before, with an assortment of fresh baked goods and fruit; a selection of tea and coffee; and a mini-fridge with juice, yogurt and wine. We also took advantage of their DVD collection and the artificial fireplace in the room for some cozy evenings in.

Speaking of those shops, we probably should have purchased something from Stonekeep Meadery, but we’d already had two tastings and bought one bottle of wine. We tried a selection of their melomels (sweet fruit meads), including a raspberry mead that just begs to be paired with dark chocolate. (It’s also possible that the woman running the tasting was [personal profile] firynze’s twin from the Mirror Universe.)

Also: While all of the tchotchkes kind of blend together, we noted that Jim Thorpe is apparently where old Hardy Boys books go to die. Any shop that had books had at least a few of them, plus a couple of Nancy Drews, too. (I didn’t buy any—my dad and I saved our full sets for when ARR can read them.)

I couldn’t resist a visit to House of Jerky, and maple brown sugar peppered bacon jerky was my reward for giving in. We also go some black pepper elk jerky and teriyaki ahi tuna jerky; the latter of which was a little more fishy than it needed to be and did not meet with ARR’s approval.

On the way home, we stopped at Country Junction - World's Largest General Store. Which is basically what happens if you take a Home Depot, and graft on a full pet store, a candy shop, a Pennsylvania tchotchke shop … plus a pizza parlor, a petting zoo and a Santa’s workshop space. We opted to buy a bunch of preserves, chocolates, fudge and some assorted dried mushrooms.

Jim Thorpe apparently was in the off-season between Christmas and Valentine’s Day—a number of the stores and restaurants were closed for the month of January, and the town was generally quiet. While we had considered skiing and horseback riding, the lousy weather made us opt out and we just relaxed instead. That, and we drove down to Philly on Saturday afternoon to see baby R (…and his parents and semi-aunt) and deliver a lot of hand-me-down baby clothes and toys. This was my kind of vacation—good food, a little social time, and a lot of relaxing with my wife, a book and a portable game system.
