The Crystals are losing their light, the world has adapted by discovering technology. Mash together the plots of several Final Fantasy games and here we are. (Seriously, I mean it about the plot-mashing: The power is being drained from the shards of the Light Crystals by magitek, which means that the lord of the Dark Crystals will be able to come forth from the Void.)

Many monsters are replaced by monsters from other FF games, such as the Whelk being replaced by the Mist Dragon, and a lot of the underworld/dungeon monsters being swapped out. In general, if you see an enemy from a different game, it's going to be much stronger than whatever it's replacing. I would, at some point, like to play a hack where the hacker didn't try to ramp up the difficulty to insane levels just because he could. (This guy, for example, had a fondness for giving all of his new monsters either very high defense, very high evade, or a new disturbingly powerful magic attack.) My willingness to grind or strategize versus just outright cheating declined as my play time went on.

Character changes: Narshe is inhabited by dwarves. The Magitek lists are different--Biggs and Wedge get Terra's list, and she gets a collection of Lore/Rage abilities. Terra is blond, and her default name is "Tina." Geshtal is "Zemus", and his big plan is ruling the world through crystal shard power. Locke doesn't have a Magic command, but gets Steal and Throw. Ditto Mog, who gets Control and "Geomance" (which appears to be Dance renamed). Edgar is a Dragoon and uses Kain's sprite; and his "womanizing" dialogue was removed. He also doesn't get magic, only Jump and "Dragon", which seems to replace Tools. Gilgamesh takes the place of Duncan's other disciple, but he's an agent of Kefka who took a crystal shard from Duncan. (And recurs in a lot of places throughout the game.) Sabin's default name is "Mash," and he gets a "Kick" attack instead of Magic. Banon's Health ability is renamed "Pray", but he's otherwise the same. Celes is a descendent of the Dawn Warriors, but her Runic and Magic are unchanged. Shadow trades his ability to do magic for GilToss, and seems to have an automatic Genji Glove effect. Cyan uses Cecil's Dark Knight sprites, and his special move is now DarkSwd, with a number of the attacks changed and/or renamed (his level 1 "Dark Shock" hits allies as well as enemies, make it much less useful). After Cyan's dream, he becomes Paladin Cecil, loses DarkSwd and gains the ability to equip espers and learn magic (his special equipment makes him a beast, with DualCast, Offering and Zantetsuken effects). Gau's default name is "Tarza", and he has an Attack command in addition to Rage and Leap. The Imp sprite in tutorials is more frog-like. (Because the Imp status has become Toad, and Green Cherries are now Maiden's Kisses.) Setzer is basically unchanged--he can even still use magic. Strago has his sprite changed to a black mage, and Lore was renamed Blue Magic. Relm is a white mage-ified version of her original sprite. General Leo loses both his Shock ability and his Offering relic during his brief appearance. Gogo is replaced (in sprite if not in abilities) by Emperor Zemus.

Equipment usage is rearranged: Locke uses knives, Shadow uses ninja swords, Cyan uses knight swords. Edgar can only use spears. Many characters have unique relics or weapons only they can use, too (which often give them really awesome bonuses). MP costs are changed--Cura costs 45 MP! I think some of the esper spells and learning rates are altered, too.

The font is different, and the translation is edited to match up to some later conventions ("Phoenix Down" instead of "fenix"; restoring profanity in places; using some characters' Japanese names; spells using the -ara and -aga construction; etc.)

A bunch of the music has been replaced with other FF tracks.

Changes as you play through, World of Balance: Edgar's "Dragon Stone" ability is functionally the same as Autocrossbow or Bio Blaster, so Figaro Cave/Mt. Kolts plays the same as usual. The boss battle is Gilgamesh and Enkidu, though, which is pretty nasty. The Lete River plays as usual. The new boss of Locke's scenario is "Tunnel Hog", which has much more powerful magic than the usual TunnelArmor. In Sabin's scenario, Kefka "absorbs the water crystal energy" around Doma, rather than using poison. The Ghosts on the Phantom Train lack their possession ability. Gilgamash also takes Siegfried's spot on the Phantom Train, and fights you as a nasty miniboss. The GoblinMages in Zozo spam powerful magic and drain your MP (or Celes', at any rate) with MagicHamr. The Zozo boss is now a Ronin, a random ninja palette-swap that I'm not sure I understand the purpose of. When you get the first set of crystal shards (magicite), Stray is missing from the bunch, and Celes is the only character who can equip them. (Stray is replaced with Chocobo, which you get in the next bunch.) The Opera House section is completely unchanged. The boss of the Magitek Research Facility is changed to a gigas palette-swap (though #128 in the mine section is unchanged). Thamasa is changed to Mysidia, and some of the NPCs are black mages or frogs (and it uses Mysidia music). The burning house boss was changed to the humanoid living flame from FF5, but the battle is the same. The monsters in Thamasa cave now include Panthers than spam Blaster and extremely hardy Land Turtles, which isn't so fun. The flight up to the Floating Continent features FF5 monsters and a battle against Gilgamesh (and Chupon) rather than Ultros; then the battle after you fall off is against the "Lost Esper" and two Ahrimans. The Clay Golems added to the Floating Continent have crazy-high defense power. Atma is replaced with Scarmiglion (apparently the guardian of earth), who has auto-reflect and can wipe out your party with Quake.

Changes as you play through, World of Ruin: The map of the World of Ruin (now "merged light and dark worlds") is somewhat changed. The events in Tzen and getting Sabin are unchanged, but you can't walk to the base of Kefka's Tower, and Maranda is on an unconnected island so you can't reach the first segmet with Tina until you get Setzer. Gilgamesh replaces Siegfried in Figaro Cave, but still does nothing of note. (The Diablos enemy added to that area has a really nasty Blaze attack.) Daryl's Tomb has a bunch of new enenmies, including Piscodemons, and the Whelk recolor chest monster is a "Gas Dragon" instead. And the boss is now the Necromancer, who'll use Level ? Holy, spam powerful magic, use Wall ??? if you equip a Reflect Ring, inflict Freeze on your characters, and use a Zombie attack when his HP gets low. (He drops the Dragon Soul, though.) Mt. Zozo is unchanged. In the Veldt Cave, the Tomb Mage (who spams Death) guards the renamed Tiger Claws; now the Esper Claws which randomly summon Titan. The SrBehemoth follows the sprite change that other behemoths have had; and the undead form is replaced with a much nastier Dark Flan. At the Colusseum, you can wager the Excalipoor sword won from Gilgamesh to fight him for the Excalibur II (it's an insanely-hard battle, and the Excalibur II is only equippable by Paladin Cyan). Several of the paintings in Jidoor have new monster sprites, but Chardanook is unchanged. Visiting Mobliz give the first scenes with Tina, but Phunbaba is now Hell Knight. (The second visit is basically unchanged.) The Phoenix Cave adds an Iron Golem enemy which uses Stone Toss to inflict confusion and can't be fled from. The red dragon seems to be beefed up, and the Dragon Horn chest instead contains the Esper Cryst, which is only usable by Tina and gives her Doublecast. In Narshe, you can only get Ragnarock as an esper, and the Moogle Charm is gone. The ice dragon has a new sprite, and Tritoch seems stronger than usual. Umaro is gone, and a battle with Biggs replaces him (and Titan replaces Terrato as the crystal you win). There are two new islands near Thamasa, with a desert that contains Fiend Dragons (that cast Heartless Angel) and Iron Giants (that use all sorts of nasty attacks); and a castle that's inaccessible by airship. Hidon has been replaced by Astos (who is insane--he inflicts confuse, slow and zombie, and can use a full-party version of Grand Delta that will automatically wipe you out). The underground castle, crawling with Death Claws, removes the Offering and replaces it with a Hades Helm for Shadow, and replaces the Raiden transformation with a fairy who hints about a dark world castle. In the upper-left corner of the map is a new island with a mountain cave that shimmers. It leads through the Esper Village map, it hides the Moogle Charm and some super-nasty monsters, and it leads to the closed-off castle. A statue of Gilgamesh lets Odin grant you the Gilgamesh esper (which is Raiden reskinned), and you can retrieve an Excalipoor if you didn't randomly win one. On the upper floor is the Kaiser Dragon, a monstrosity that uses Mighty Guard, WallChange, and every powerful attack spell in the game--if you somehow get past it (I cheated), you get the Dragon Sword and Hades Blade, the latter unusable by any standard party member. Also, Kaiser counts as one of the 8 dragons. Triangle Island changes around some treasures, removing Relm's special accessory and adding Tina and Edgar-specific armors. The Dream Stooges are replaced with the Magus Sisters; Wrexsoul with Cerberus (who lacks the regenerating Soul Flames but spams Countdown effects). There's a small crescent island in the middle of the map with underwater battles; you can teach Mog Water Rondo and fight Leviathan. Leviathan is another superboss (who again counts as a Dragon) with attacks that can destroy your party in one hit, plus stop, toad and other tricks. He drops the Water Jewel relic for Celes, and gives you a new Leviathan esper. Doom Gaze (renamed "Deathguize") is unchanged, but drops a dragon tool for Edgar in addition to the Bahamut shard. The Holy Dragon in the Fanatics Tower drops the Ultima Ring. At the top is the Paladin Sword, the second-best weapon for Cyan, but you need to fight a White Wind spamming Atomos to get it.

Kefka's Tower is littered with the nasty new enemies from the bonus areas. Atma is replaced by Lich, who drops the Hades Shield for Cyan (and isn't optional). The random weapon battle is replaced by another Gilgamesh battle, this time him and two Skulleaters. The Skull Dragon is replaced by the 2HeadDragon, another superboss with massively powerful attacks and the ability to inflict stop. Beating him gets the Whisper Ring relic for Setzer, and defeating all 8 dragons gets an overpowered version of Crusader. The statues are replaced with Tiamat (who spams wind magic and is immune to most elements, and drops the Dragon Lance), Kraken (who spams water magic and can heal himself with Big Wave and White Wind, and uses Force Field; and drops the Masamune), and Marilith (who behaves mostly like Goddess by using Love Token and drops the Excalibur). The tower leading to Kefka is generally unchanged (though renamed "Zande"); but Kefka is replaced with a nigh-unbeatable Dark Cloud that spams full-party, non-elemental 9999-damage attacks. I'm not sure he's actually beatable without cheating.

Things I'm pretty sure I missed: It looks like Biggs was supposed to be the Umaro replacement character; you probably needed to bring Zemus to meet him. Also, I never picked up Golem and Zoneseek (or their replacements) from the Auction House, so I didn't see how they changed. Finally, I'm pretty sure there was something else to do at the Colosseum, or more things to get, but I didn't bother.

The story: Centuries ago, the Summoners wiped themselves out when they tried the Final Summoning, the Dark Cloud. They accidentally opened a door to the Void that killed them; which left the Light Crystals unguarded. When those crystals shattered 20 years earlier, Zemus and the Empire were able to invade the Summoner/Esper world. Four Warriors of Light are required to restore the powers of the Crystal Shards into crystals. Cid reveals to Celes that she's the Warrior of Water. Madonna (renamed "Yuna") was the strongest of the Summoners, and the only one to survive the Final Summoning. Through Bahamut's Blessing, she and Madeen birthed Tina, the Warrior of Fire. Mysidia (Thamasa) was the last resting place of the crystals before the shattering; the inhabitants conserved their magic powers to wait for the Light Warriors to emerge. The statues on Thamasa island are now (fakes of) three of the four Dark Crystals, the fourth being merged with Zande, the spirit of "Shadow" now known as Dark Cloud. The real ones are sealed in the statues, and they're sealing the void. That lost fourth crystal/Dark Cloud/spirit is, of course, really Kefka. Edgar reveals that he's the Earth Warrior, and that Titan gave him the power to let Figaro move under the earth. Setzer is the Wind Warrior. (Which makes sense, in that the game forces you to get Celes, Edgar and Setzer before taking on Kefka as the absolute minimum.) The ending sequence leads to the Dark Crystals being destroyed, and the Light Crystals re-forming (and being added to the final montage of scenes) as espers disappear and the world returns to balance.

(The hacker didn't seem quite clear on what was the Void versus what was the Dark Cloud / Dark Crystals vs. exactly how the cosmology worked, here. It got a bit confusing.)

On a note of irritation: This game caused SNES9X to spaz out and close more than anything else I've played on it; particularly around Zozo.

Overall: The plot is a hodgepodge mess of the original game and tropes/references to the rest of the series. The new monsters and superbosses make playing through the game honestly nigh-impossible. The thing is, there were some genuinely good ideas and a lot of potential here, but I think the hacker tried to turn everything (references, difficulty, changes) up to eleven and it didn't really work.
