A bunch of random (and spoilery) thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises.

My dad’s complaint was that it was too long, and there wasn’t enough time with Wayne as Batman versus as emo-Bruce or being in the pit. I actually was engrossed enough in the movie while watching it that it never really felt long, and there was still way more Batman time (and “Batman being useful” time) than in Batman Returns. We established back at my birthday party that he was the Worst Batman Ever—not in terms of acting ability, but in terms of sheer incompetence at saving innocents and stopping crime.

It occurs to me that The Dark Knight was really long, too; and in both cases I really wouldn’t feel the need to watch it again, at least not for a few years.

The actor overlap with Inception amused me mightily. It was like Nolan said to the studio, “Can I cast all my friends in this?” and they were all, “Do whatever you want, I’m up to my eyeballs in money.”

They handwaved a lot about Wayne’s injuries and healing, but at least they acknowledged how much being Batman would destroy a human body. The servo-knee thing was pretty cool, though lucky for Wayne he didn’t need it any more after being dropped in the pit.

The twist ending caught me off guard, given that they basically used Bane’s comics origin, but melded Ra’s al Ghul and Talia into it. My knowledge of comics allowed me to see the "Robin" reference coming, even without having seen any spoilers for it: Tim Drake became Robin when he recognized Robin doing a move only Dick Grayson could pull off, and reasoned everyone’s identities from there. Blake basically did the same thing with Wayne; and though I wasn’t sure if he’d end up as the sidekick or the replacement, the story’s focus on him meant he’d definitely be something.

Similarly, it was pretty clear that Wayne would survive. Not because Nolan wouldn’t kill him—except for one thing, I was pretty sure he would—but the scene with Alfred’s dream of the café was too blatant a foreshadowing.

I wonder how much money they need to pay Christopher Nolan to retcon Talia’s death and/or the timeline of the movie so that Damien Wayne could exist in this universe, and we could have a sequel featuring Robin John Blake versus Robin Damien Wayne for the Mantel of the Bat? (Though there’s nothing saying Wayne and “Miranda” hadn’t gotten together years before, during the clean energy project’s inception, and Damien isn’t already being raised by the League of Shadows during this movie.)

Overall: Fitting end to the trilogy.
