What’s for breakfast?
Feb. 27th, 2006 10:25 amSix people each get up at a different time in the morning, and they each have a different food and beverage for breakfast. Who eats what at what time?
People: Kendra, Laura, Mike, Nancy, Oliver, Pete
Foods: Bagels, cereal, eggs, grapefruit, oatmeal, toast
Beverages: Milk, Orange juice, Apple Juice, Coffee, Tea, Jolt cola
Times: 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00
1. You’d think that the person getting up the latest wouldn’t mind cooking. You’d be wrong: The 10:00 riser doesn’t consume anything that requires the application of heat.
2. Pete, a college student, needs a caffeinated beverage in the morning. Never mind that his first class is at 9:15, and he sleeps as late as he can. Also note that Pete does not have access to a kitchen, which limits breakfast choices.
3. Mike and Kendra have long commutes. They get up the earliest, and both go in for caffeinated beverages.
4. Oliver doesn’t have to get to work until 9:00, but he can’t get back to sleep after his girlfriend’s alarm goes off. (His girlfriend is not someone in this puzzle, FYI.) He cooks breakfast for both of them, but doesn’t need a caffeinated drink to stay awake.
5. Laura eats cereal and drinks juice. Nancy also drinks juice, but is unfortunately allergic to citrus.
6. The 5:00 riser learned the hard way not to try making toast, when his tie got caught in the toaster. He gets a bagel now.
7. The coffee drinker can manage toast in the morning without damage to clothing.
8. The person who eats oatmeal wakes up later than the one who drinks milk.

Date: 2006-02-27 05:20 pm (UTC)I think I have the answers, but I found that I had to make a lot of assumptions...like the fact that Pete's non-access to a kitchen precluded coffee and tea as options (hot plates? coffee/tea out?)...and that Pete could have breakfast and get to his class in 15 minutes...stuff like that.
Mike wakes up at 5 and has a bagel and tea.
Kendra wakes up at 6 and has toast and coffee.
Oliver wakes up at 7 and has eggs and milk.
Nancy wakes up at 8 and has oatmeal and apple juice.
Pete wakes up at 9 and has grapefruit and jolt (breakfast of champions).
Laura wakes up at 10 and has cereal and orange juice.

Date: 2006-02-27 07:17 pm (UTC)And frankly, I heard enough stories of people waking up at 8:59 for 9:00 classes, fifteen minutes is frikken' forever.

Date: 2006-02-27 05:49 pm (UTC)Kendra - 6, Toast, Coffee
Oliver - 7, Eggs, Milk
Nancy - 8, Oatmeal, Apple Juice
Pete - 9, Grapefruit, Jolt

I had to make a couple of assumptions, though. Don't know if it's actually right.
