A romhack of A Link to the Past that was advertised as being “relatively low difficulty.” I’m not sure what scale they’re using for that because sure, it isn’t Parallel Worlds bullshit, but it’s a fair sight harder than vanilla.

You need a solid knowledge of things that are generally optional or gimmicky in the original, like using the hookshot to pass spikes, dash-bouncing, setting bombs to hit crystal switches, using the boomerang on a diagonal, etc. You also need to be prepared to fight Dark World bosses with the basic sword and often without your usual tools.

I found the resource management particularly interesting—there don’t seem to be any shops besides the potion shop, so getting more bombs isn’t easy and often you’re only given one or two—enough to try a puzzle once. (The non-doubled magic meter has similar problems.) I suspect there’s an assumption you’re using save-states; or at least that you’re enough of a Zelda “expert” to not accidentally waste scarce resources.

I give them a lot of credit for building a new world map and only including what they needed; and not filling endless dungeons—this is probably half the length of vanilla, but every area has some solid puzzles and decent ideas.

Overall: I found the action level too hard (and used cheat codes, and also save states for the Ganon battle that was full of extra holes), but the puzzles were just right for me. There was only one point (where you need to hookshot to a wall you can’t see) that I got frustrated.

Ooh. This sounds interesting. I love A Link to the Past, and would be interested in trying this sometime, though I've never used this sort of hack before. But I bet E can help me. :)
