So, this is an enhanced port of Hyrule Warriors Legends, featuring all the material from that game plus a new set of huge Adventure mode maps, a “My Fairy” minigame, and most importantly, couch co-op play. I’m not going to re-hash my previous review because everything else I said in it still applies. Like it was noted the classic review I was given of Dynasty Warriors 3 back in the day, it’s the most fun you’ll have pressing the attack button over and over.
We played this in turns (generally either Jethrien or my playing with ARR as the second player) and were at around 60 hours when I wrote this review, having completed all of Legend Mode at least once and basically two full Adventure Mode maps. (The Talking Time thread about this game is titled “I will never 100% Hyrule Warriors”, and that’s totally accurate.) There are so, so many unlocks, including new costumes, upgraded weapons, extra heart containers, and all of the costumes and upgrade items for the fairy companions.
I did find it interesting that the first Adventure mode map, which is based on the original Legend of Zelda, makes it tricky to tell where to use the unlocking items and you either need a guide or to use a Compass to find the right spot; while the Wind Waker map makes it very obvious what item is needed in which spot because there are unique obstacles to use them on. The Classic map is extremely open; the Wind Waker map is very linear. Something for everyone?
I also appreciate that they added a bunch of maps and bonus characters related to Link’s Awakening and A Link Between Worlds, (content notably missing in earlier versions!) though it irks me that they’re only unlocked in high-difficulty late-game maps. Marin’s Wind Fish attacks are awesome and should be available earlier.
Overall: This is everything I wanted in a Warriors game that I could play alongside my son. And we will never, ever complete everything in it.
