John Constantine joins the crew as a regular, the time bureau gains legitimacy, Gary is a running gag, and magical creatures of all manner of absurdity rampage through the timeline. (Just in case you thought the show might be taking itself seriously, the first few monsters include a carnivorous unicorn, a vengeful fairy godmother, and a punk-rock leprechaun.) Balls-to-the-wall insanity reigns.
Taking a page from The Flash, they bring back Amaya’s actress as a different character: A magical shapeshifter mode-locked into her double. Slowly and carefully over the course of four seasons, by introducing new original characters and slowly dropping old ones, they’ve shifted the gender balance of main and supporting cast members to majority female. For that matter, it’s heavily queer, too (Sarah, John, Gary and Charlie are bi; Ava is either bi or lesbian; Mona isn’t into humans).
And they ramp up the crazy as the season goes on: Stealing government funds and making demonic pacts to build a theme park! Mick Rory at a romance author con! Gary and his demonic nipple! Return of the fairy godmother! The last episode, of course, goes even bigger: Ray is chummy with a very affable Vandal Savage in Hell, there’s a giant dragon in a magical theme park, and a James Taylor sing-along to bring someone back to life.
We go into next season with Astra having released the souls of some of history’s worst dictators and murderers from Hell; Zari has rewritten history so that her brother Behrad has been a member of the legends instead of her; Nora is still Gary’s fairy godmother; and the world knows that magic exists but that it isn’t so bad, really. Also, while the full extent of Charlie’s power-restoration isn’t clear, she’s clearly got enough juice to be useful.
Overall: This show is nuts and I love it for that. They embraced the crazy and the queer and while I wouldn’t say it’s better than any of the other DC/CW shows, I’d definitely say it’s the most fun.
