The Dragon Prince (Netflix, Season 2) - If you liked Avatar: The Last Airbender and the first season of this, it’s more of the same—lessons about family, lots of representation, adventures that feel like they have actual stakes but are still suitable for families to watch. The episodes with the pirate captain are amazingly hilarious and stand out as the best. Viren keeps just piling bad choices on top of bad choices; it’ll be interesting to see where he hits bottom, because he’s likely got a ways further down to go. It looks like they’re trying to split the band apart for the third season, which should make for some interesting jumping around. I reiterate my theories about the king and his bird, especially since Ezrin can most definitively talk to animals.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix, Season 2) – And speaking of family and representation! I loved the references to the old series costumes in Bow’s imagination as theyplayed D&D planned an attack with miniatures and a battlemap. (For that matter, the mustache on one of Bow’s dads.) Scorpia wins for “villain I most want to hug,” and I suspect she’ll have a big flashback episode before the series is out. (I also particularly loved “drunk Adora” when the First Ones virus got into the sword again.) I was a little annoyed that this was only a seven-episode half-season, which lets them cliffhanger on Catra’s fate, Hordak’s portal, Shadow-Weaver’s plans, and the mysterious message from the Crimson Wastes. I’m guessing the six-episode Season 3 will resolve a bunch of those.
Happy Death Day 2U - A sequel to the Groundhog Day-style horror film; much less horror/dark comedy and more sci-fi/dark comedy with a few horror scenes. They keep you guessing with the setup and reuse most of the setpieces and characters from the first movie in new ways. Some aspects were better, some were worse, but on the whole it was about on par with the original. I’m actually pretty curious what they’ll do if this becomes a triogy.
