Following a climactic battle and averting the total destruction of the universe, the Paladins of Voltron make their way back to Earth.

Right off the bat, they tell us that Shiro is gay. As in, he had a serious live-in boyfriend named Adam who left him because he couldn’t stop going on dangerous space missions. I’m so glad I don’t follow fandom.

I figured out the time-skip mid-way through the second episode (it’s made explicit at the end of the third). Three years is less than I would have guessed, actually, but I suppose they didn’t want to redraw the returning character models for “old” versions. Also, the flashbacks imply that the events of the past six seasons took, at most, a year and a half, which seems awfully fast. (It’s two years from when Shiro, Matt and Dr. Holt leave on the Kerberos mission to when Dr. Holt returns to Earth.)

By adding Keith’s mom and the lost-Altean Romelle to the cast, it looks like they’ve the doubled the number of female core cast members…and then promptly went three-quarters of the season ignoring them, with two episodes that were Paladin-only, and then a two-parter flashback to Earth, then sidelining them completely in favor of the Earthbound crew. Lance’s sister Veronica and the four-person fighter pilot crew got more screentime over the course of the full 13 episodes.

(I was greatly irritated when, from outside the Milky Way, Pidge kept saying they were “in Earth’s solar system.” Similarly, the part where Sendak’s ship hits “terminal velocity” and Sendak and Shiro go out and jump around on it with seemingly-normal gravity.)

Yes, the Atlas turning into a giant robot was cool, but it’s clearly too big to actually fight most Voltron-sized foes, as was clearly obvious. Even after transforming, it remained mostly a distraction so Voltron could save the day.

I loved that Hunk’s rock-girlfriend (Shay the Balmeran) returns to visit him in the epilogue.

Haggar remains a dangling plot hook, as does the missing colony of lost Alteans (who she obviously took and is using to make super-Robeasts out of). But they’re slowly wrapping up loose ends?

Overall: This show has an impressive way of ending seasons in such a way that they easily could be the end of the series, but apparently aren’t. Season 8 will be…something? Who even knows which of the million characters they’ll focus on?
