Steven Universe (TV Series, Season 5)
Jul. 11th, 2018 10:48 amWe last left Steven (and Lars) on a ship to Homeworld where Yellow and Blue Diamonds were planning to prosecute him for him/his mother shattering Pink Diamond. Revelations are had.
Continuity lockout is in full force: If you haven’t watched the earlier seasons, you’ll have no idea what’s going on or why any of it matters. Heck, I have watched it all and I still needed to remind myself of things like who Kevin was and why I cared.
The reveal that Rose was Pink Diamond all along smacks of something that was planned from the very start, and I’ll bet that a careful re-watch of earlier mythos episodes will reveal clues to it much earlier.
The finale two-parter actually plays like a series finale—I don’t know if that was the intention, but they pull together most of the big plotlines, resolve the fate of several hanging bits (the cluster, Bismuth, Lapis) and have a grand battle that is nonetheless resolved by Steven talking things out. (Steven has solved all of the major problems with feelings thus far, there’s no reason to believe this would be any different.)
I can see them getting another season with White Diamond as a new antagonist, resolving Lars getting back to Earth with his space pirate crew of off-color gems, maybe make more stories about the supporting cast, but really, this season made real progress (and resolution) on a number of ongoing threads: Sadie found friends and moved on with her life; Lars grew up; the mayor’s ousting put the town in much better shape; and with the Rose reveal, the Crystal Gems are finally in a place to grow and heal.
Overall: If the series ended here, it would be okay. They successfully resolve a lot of the major mysteries / conflicts.
