Skill oddities

We recently bought a new bed, and I want to attach our old headboard to the new frame. The holes don't line up, so I'll need to drill some new ones so I can fit everything together. In theory, one set of holes and screws should do the job. I'm planning to do two, and get big washers for each end to spread the force.
It occurred to me that I always err on the side of "build this stronger than it needs to be", and that's likely because all of my carpentry knowledge comes from doing tech theater: No matter what you build for a stage set and what its intended purpose, you need to assume that at some point somebody's going to tap-dance on it, and design accordingly.
