To ensure that the Space Pirates can never obtain any more Metroids, the Galactic Federation sends several teams to the Metroid's home planet, SR388, to destroy them once and for all. However, when each of the teams disappears, the Galactic Federation contracts Samus Aran to finish the mission.

This is a fan remake of Metroid 2: The Return of Samus. It’s a melding of the original Metroid 2 with the improvements made in Super Metroid (and later). These include a wider viewing area, an auto-map and mini-map, an inventory screen (and the ability to turn off upgrades), and save points that refill health and missiles. Graphics and controls have been upgraded, obviously. The map is very similar to the original, though a number of puzzles are different and segments specifically relating to new items (Super Missile, Speed Boost, Charge Beam, and Power Bomb) have been added. The areas are much more distinct, though the game remains mostly linear.

The various evolutions of Metroids are as they should be, though several (most notably Alphas) have smaller vulnerable hitboxes; and Omega Metroids no longer float. To add more variety, not only do different Metroids of the same type sometimes use different attack patterns, but there are completely new bosses with interesting strategies. Most of the best upgrades are guarded in some way.

They added both a logbook in the menu that fills in lore of each area, but also the opportunity to find out what happened to the research and rescue teams that were sent ahead of Samus. (Spoiler: They don’t survive.)

I was able to find most of the secrets, though there are a bunch of upgrades that rely on being a Metroid expert and knowing secret techniques (shinesparking, wall-jumping). They’re optional, though. And shortcuts were added in a bunch of the later areas that allow you to quickly revisit earlier ones to find things you missed.

There’s a trio of difficulty modes, which I always like. I certainly couldn’t get through this if it defaulted to Hard mode. Easy mode allows you to tank against Metroids if you’re just a little careful about it. Oh, and the Queen Metroid’s projectiles can be destroyed for energy and missile refills, making that battle much more feasible to beat even if you miss upgrades.

Overall: This is really, really well done. Basically, if you like 2D Metroid games, this is totally worth your time.
