Like Jethrien, I have some experience of being “late to the party” with this book—there isn’t much here that I haven’t heard before. It fully qualifies as “Some anvils need to be dropped” in terms of being an important topic, but if you’ve frequented vaguely-liberal spaces on the internet over the past decade, you’ve likely absorbed most of it already. (It’s also quickly becoming dated. Though the points are still entirely salient, current events examples and books from 2007-2008 don’t carry as much heft in 2016, and which conservative blowhards are pulling which bullshit, while similar, does change.)
Her style is the haughty, faux-casual faux-academic style of “educated” blog posting—striking that delicate balance between being highfalutin’ enough to sound properly authoritative, and interesting/casual enough to attract readers.
The book is repetitive—I have no idea if this was original published as separate articles and blog posts, but whether it was or not, it could have used a bit more editing so she didn’t say the same thing a dozen times over the course of a dozen chapters.
And boy, does she love footnotes: Both aside comments and citations. It’s like they were having a going-out-of-business clearance sale at the footnote store.
Overall: If you are unfamiliar with the topic, because you’ve lived a well-insulated life or you’re particularly young, this is a lovely primer to put on your Feminism 101 reading list. If you could teach FEM101 already, you needn’t bother here.
