In the distant past, the great civilization of Atlantis was destroyed by tidal waves and sank under the sea. In 1914, Milo Thatch joins an expedition to find the ruins of the city everyone else believes is only a myth. (Spoiler: It’s totally not a myth.)

Apparently Jethrien and I are trying to catch up on animated films before ARR wants to watch them? This movie is delightful fun and has some gorgeous animation (you can tell the animators watched Michael J. Fox acting the lines and based Milo’s movements off of him, and the action sequences are really nice), but it makes no goddamn sense.

According to the internet, the initial Ireland vs. Iceland thing is actually accurate to the language. The fact that the Atlanteans speak a “root language” and therefore can converse in modern French and English is still total nonsense.

Jethrien pointed out that if Kida is 8,800 years old and most of the Atlanteans are similarly immortal, shouldn’t someone else have better memories of the last days of Atlantis? And remember how to read? Or maybe the royal family is longer-lived than most, but still, you’d think that being able to read instruction manuals that are printed on the flying cars would be a critical skill people would want to preserve.

Why was Helga set up as a vamp when that characterization was immediately dropped? How the hell did they fit all that stuff in the one mini-sub that survived Leviathan’s attack? If outsiders who saw Atlantis were all killed, how did the Vikings who wrote the journal escape? (For that matter, did the Vikings have a submarine? How did they get there?)

And if Whitmore wasn’t evil, was he just a crazy idiot? He clearly hired Roark repeatedly and it looks like (from the first sequence) Helga works directly for him—how did he end up not being evil?

Overall: Anachronism stew and a plot that doesn’t survive fridge logic. Fun, but I can see why it wasn’t a big box-office success.
