Reviews of Many Webcomic Books
Jan. 25th, 2014 02:22 pmHyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh - Brosh is obviously a person with a lot of issues and a strangely-functioning brain. But she also is very good at expressing said issues in a way that makes them both relatable and freakin’ hilarious. And at this point in my life, I very much pity her mother and hope that ARR isn’t quite as…creative…as she is.
Penny Arcade Volume 9: Passion’s Howl - There seems to be a greater concentration of musings about the commentary itself in the commentary than usual. I suppose, after eight other books, you start running out of good stories to tell. If you were curious about Gabe’s anxiety problems, though, you can hear all about those.
Girl Genius Volume 11: Agatha Heterodyne and the Hammerless Bell - I feel like I might need to binge all of Girl Genius in a single go. There are too many characters at this point and I don’t read it online (because too little happens in a single page), so I only catch up once every year or so. Once I’ve remembered who everyone is and what they’re all trying to do, then it’s fun. (The fact that, though I love their work, the Foglios have a limited selection of faces, so I’m trying to remember everyone’s hair color and which set of stylish Victorian undergarments they’re wearing.
Girl Genius Volume 12: Agatha Heterodyne and the Siege of Mechanicsburg - Also, honestly, there are a few too many one-off characters (who might or might not end up being important) who kinda get scrunched into the panels of a single page and disappear into the chaos. This is a combination of the art and coloring style with the needs of a page-a-day webcomic, I realize, but it irks me. There are still some really fabulous bits of dialogue, though.
