Japan produced RPGs like American companies produced platformers: Frequently and often badly. Very, very few of them made it stateside during the SNES era, though most of the good ones eventually got remade, fan-translated, or both. (Also a bunch of the crappy ones, see: Villgust, Dual Orb 2.) I had downloaded a big collection of the fan-translated ones a ways back, though I only added the ones I had a particular interest in (usually from a website review) to my backlog. It occured to me to go through the rest of the collection and get a sense for what was there, in case anything else was worth adding to said backlog.
My backlog offically includes: The Magical Land of WOZZ [Translation Corporation], Bahamut Lagoon [DeJap, Neill Corlett, Tomato], Treasure of the Rudras [Aeon Genesis], and Live-a-Live [Aeon Genesis]. I've pretty much determined that I want to play through all of those.
Dark Law - Meaning of Death [Aeon Genesis]
They were trying very hard on the graphics--they're very pretty--but there isn't quite enough detail to tell exactly what needs to be done without randomly clicking on everything. Apparently the battle system is similar to Treasure Hunter G and the plot is an open-ended series of adventures like Romancing SaGa. (Apparently one of the last SNES games made, this came out in 1997 in Japan.) May deserve some actual time spent on it.
Gulliver Boy [Stealth]
Lip flaps, but no words (English or Japanese) in SNES9X. On ZSNES, the translation patch works. It's a 3/4-view adventure/rpg (there appear to be levels, and attacks have a "recharge" period like Secret of Mana) starring the giant-haired Gulliver as he and his mad scientist friend Edison try to rescue Misty and find the blue stones that will allow them to defeat Judo, the evil master of Spain. Apparently based on an anime series. Might be worth playing with a controller.
Gunman's Proof [Aeon Genesis]
Zelda clone with a wild west cowboys vs. aliens theme. Infinite-shot gun instead of a sword. Includes a score counter and extra lives. Hard-to-navigate menus (can't tell what treasures you've picked up / what's useful). Cartoony, vaguely Earthbound-like. Might be worth playing with a controller.
Hiouden Legend of the Scarlet King - The Demonic Oath [Aeon Genesis]
Tactical Game requiring SNES mouse. Graphics similar to Populus.
Jyutei Senki [Aeon Genesis]
Tactical "miniatures wargame".
Madou Monogatari [Aeon Genesis, J2e]
Cartoony, graphics (rather than numbers)-based beginner rpg about a little girl going to magical kindergarden.
Magna Braban - Henreki no Yusya [KingMike]
RPG. Early-era graphics. Graphical glitches in SNES9X. Standard story about kid who wants to be a knight and defeat the evil demon lord. Automatic battles.
Monstania [Aeon Genesis]
Game hangs after opening in SNES9X. Seems to work fine on ZSNES. Graphics are similar to Super Mario RPG; uses a turn-based tactical system somewhere between Treasure Hunter G and a roguelike. You have two characters and generally move them together, switching off which one can act. (Which is a little confusing on a keyboard.) Childhood friends Fron and Tia fight monsters and search for fairies, who have been disappearing from the island of Monstania. Kind of interesting.
Neugier [Haeleth]
3/4 view action/adventure game with questionable 3D jumping implementation. Ys-ish small attack range.
Pretty Soldier Sailormoon ~Another Story~ [Bishoujo Senshi]
Fairly standard rpg at first glance, long enough "start to slime" time that it's hard to get a feel for quickly. Appears to use names from the english dub of the cartoon.
Shiren the Wanderer [Aeon Genesis]
"Mysterious dungeon" roguelike, made by the same people as Taloon's Great Adventure with most of the same graphics and systems. Seems to involve more travel and variety.
Super Robot Wars 3 [Aeon Genesis]
Tactical "miniatures wargame" IN SPACE.
Wonder Project J [WakdHacks]
Robot boy raising sim, involving navigating a robot name Pino through various tasks.
