This year’s book count was much closer to my mean than last year: 27 prose books, broken down into 8 Kindle books, 7 other ebooks, and 12 physical books.

I actually read significantly more non-fiction than anything else, most of it being video game-related: 10 of the books can be grouped into the category of “video game histories” (and 5 of those were from the Boss Fight Books Humble Bundle). After that came 7 sci-fi novels, 3 memoirs/biographies, and a handful of other things.

Martha Wells shows up four times, as I read the first four Murderbot Diaries books. All three of Clyde Mandelin’s “Legends of Localization” books appear as well. Seanan McGuire also gets to be a repeat author, as I read another two Wayward Children books.

In terms of recommendations, very few of them are universal: I clearly enjoyed the Murderbot Diaries (starting with All Systems Red) by Martha Wells. Bible Adventures by Gabe Durham was probably the most interesting of the Boss Fight Books. Lying Awake by Mark Salzman was outside my usual comfort zone and it was fascinating.

In terms of non-fiction, I’ll totally recommend these if you are specifically interested in the topics: Like a Bat Out of Hell: The Larger Than Life Story of Meat Loaf by Mick Wall, Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire by Justin J. Lehmiller, Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach, Game Wizards: The Epic Battle for Dungeons & Dragons by Jon Peterson, Legends of Localization: Earthbound by Clyde Mandelin, and Useable Usability: Small Steps for Making Stuff Better by Eric Reiss.

On that comics front, I read the Dynamite Favorites and New Hits Bundle (11 volumes), the 25 Years of Oni Press Bundle (29 volumes), the Comics Are For Everyone Pride Month Collection (39 volumes), the Top Cow’s 30th Anniversary Bundle (23 volumes), a collection of physical books picked up at various cons (20 volumes), and four comics from Izneo.com that I haven’t gotten around to posting reviews of. Oh, and I re-read the first 50 issues or so of the Archie Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from the 90s. So that’s on the order of 130 trade paperbacks or around 650 pamphlets. (Damn!)

I have no idea what the new year will bring. I still have a bunch of memoirs and non-fiction stacked up but relatively little prose fiction that strongly interests me; and I have several more Humble Bundles I haven’t put on my ReMarkable; and a banker’s box full of Marvel trades. We’ll see how far I get!

We did seventeen 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles: Beads and Baubles, Springbok Candies, Lego Minifigs, Zoo Animals, Classic Video Games, 90s Nostalgia, Vintage Kid Foods, The Works of Bob Rozakis, Vintage Candy Store, Baseball Memorabilia, Family Photos, Postage Stamps, Candy Bars, Classic Restaurants, Crazy Candies, Pokemon Showdown, Sloth Yoga.

We did five 500-piece jigsaw puzzles: Pokemon Bubbles, Wonder Woman, Superman: The Secret Years, Pandas, Pokemon Squares.

We did three 300-piece jigsaw puzzles: Pokemon Collection, Candy Shop, Spider-Man. And also the 250-piece Mario puzzle twice; once with Alex and once as a speed-puzzle by myself.

That’s 26 “real” jigsaw puzzles, which is actually more than last year! (And I’m surprised to realize that, actually. I thought we had slowed down…but then, several of these involved more teamwork than last year, which makes a lot of difference for churning through puzzles.) I maintain my opinions that Springbok, Buffalo and White Mountain make the best puzzles, but you can end up with something really fun by putting the right mosaic of pictures into PuzzleYou.com. I continue to shy away from anything that’s a single painting or piece of classic art (they tend to have a lot of muddy colors and indistinct edges) and prefer bright, distinct colors and well-defined lines.

I also did 21 Paint-By-Stickers: The last 3 from the “Fine Art” book; 10 from the “Animals” book that I got for my birthday; and 8 from the comics covers book I got last Christmas. (As noted, these usually take me about an hour while watching TV. They’re relaxing.)
