Uticon is a fun little one-room show in Utica, NY. Maybe 30 dealers and pros setting up tables, then a few hundred guests. My dad and I sold a few of the books his work was recently reprinted in and a box of paperback “books for a buck,” and there were half a dozen fans who brought things for him to sign and were clearly excited to meet him. I found a bunch of the 80s Marvel Transformers comics to bring home for ARR, and a bunch of independent trade paperbacks and geeky buttons for me.

Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell is utterly adorable. It’s a series of stories (by a group of authors but the same artist) about a neighborhood full of kids who build cardboard costumes and have adventures. And it’s casually multicultural and inclusive. (There’s a boy who’s the “evil sorceress” because that just who he likes to be; and it’s no big thing.) And everything ends happily and despite a few darker topics touched upon (mostly from the standpoint of adults not always being right) it’s really cute. I’m reading it with ARR.

Black Peak by E. Hanby - A drug-addicted space trucker gets a custom-made holodeck girl and she’s more than he bargained for. It’s a mindscrew book and it’s not entirely clear how much is real, how much is computer simulation, and how much is the guy’s drug-addled imagination. Interesting, though not for everybody.

Chibi Tsubame Creations is a button / accessory shop. The woman who runs it is a sweetheart and a total dork. We talked anime for a while but I ended up buying Magic: The Gathering and Mario Brothers buttons from her. (Her con selection is much broader than what’s on Etsy.)
