Princeton Reunions 2015
Jun. 1st, 2015 10:19 pmAs per my tradition, I only went for the Saturday of Reunions. Jethrien went down on Friday morning, so I brought ARR down (and though our original plan had been to take the train, friends who were staying with us were able to drive us down).
Doing Reunions with a toddler is a radically different experience from doing it alone or with a very portable baby. We missed a bunch of the band concert because he felt it was too loud and wanted to explore. I missed the PUP luncheon and we ate Frist food in Campus Club in a bid to get ARR to take a nap (it failed). We skipped out on virtually all of the P-Rade so he could try a bouncy slide and then to shelter from the heat in the CJL. I didn’t get to see (or spend time with) most of the people I wanted to.
Adding to that, while I had the brilliant idea to order the cookie night cookies to be delivered directly to Campus Club by a local supermarket, about a third of them disappeared before cookie night (and signs point to them getting eaten by whoever was in the club on Friday night—investigations are still ongoing).
But by the end of the day, I chose to focus on the positive: I didn’t have to take ARR on the train. I got Bent Spoon mint cookie ice cream. We hit a decent amount of the band picnic, and ARR played “marching band” with a broken plastic horn (and got to play a real drum and xylophone). ARR successfully peed in a urinal (at the CJL) not once, but twice. (Is it weird that’s the thing I’m second-happiest with out of the whole experience?) I got to see the Theatre~Intime show, “How the Other Half Loves”. I did get to see and chat with a bunch of people I see only once or twice a year. We got copies of the new Band, Wildcats and Koleinu CDs. Somebody recognized my Orange Lantern shirt and thought it was awesome! And nobody got heatstroke or even sunburned.
And most importantly, Cookie Night was an unqualified success. Apparently I had grossly over-ordered, so even with the missing cookies we still had leftovers at the end of the evening. (And that was with a very solid turnout.) Koleinu sounds fantastic and I got to duet on “Hallelujah” and solo “One Day”. And I took a bunch of pride in the fact that I’ve created something that other people actively look forward to and enjoy—and that I could get myself to relax and enjoy it.
Reunions also got a coda: The deluge on Sunday meant that lots of flights were cancelled, so Lithoglyphic and her husband ended up at our place that night. There wasn’t much time for socializing, but we got to show off our house before they headed back to Michigan. Fairylane and her husband, trapped by a lack of flights to Canada, came out to us for dinner on Monday, too.
