Play Dates
Feb. 4th, 2015 08:51 amARR is finally getting to the point where a “play date” specifically for him to play with the other kid is starting to become a thing. Granted, he and other kids his age mostly just climb over each other and fight over toys, but if you can get a good rhythm going, they can actually meaningfully interact…
They can chase each other around and convince each other to scream louder.
Okay, we’re not really there yet.
We had one play date with my oldest friend, and her husband and son (who is three weeks younger than ARR, though bigger, less verbal, and far more mellow) on Saturday. They mostly played in tandem, occasionally snatching toys from each other or, with a little prompting, giving each other hugs. I suspect the distraction of our house being full of a zillion toys played a role in this.
On Sunday, we met up with a college friend and his son, who usually share Gymboree classes with ARR. We walked over to the mall together, and the boys played rousing games of “wave at each other on the escalators”, “chase each other through the food court”, “roll toy cars in mostly the same direction”, and “not wanting things but not wanting the other boy to have them either.”
There’s a reason we didn’t invite any other toddlers to ARR’s 2nd birthday party. Perhaps we’ll let him choose the guest list for his 3rd.
