Assorted DC animation
Sep. 30th, 2013 02:48 pmThe season 2 disc sets of Young Justice come with “bonus cartoons”, which are three episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold (focusing on Blue Beetle), and three episodes of Static Shock. So I recently watched those and started in on the standalone DC animated films.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold is goofy but amusing, focusing on the technological gimmicks in Batman’s utility belt and the pow-bam-sock fight scenes. It appears to be aimed at younger kids than most of the cartoon shows, but that’s not a bad thing—in a few years when my son is actually watching and comprehending cartoons, I might pick up the full set.
Static Shock …is less well-done. The animation screams “80s low-rent cartoon”, and it feels like it was written by 40-year-old white guys trying to be hip for black kids but still “family friendly”. And that works about as well as you’d think. (Which is a shame—I like Static as a character, and I think they did a good job with Virgil in both Young Justice and his short-lived New 52 book.)
Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths – This is a pretty standard Justice League vs. Crime Syndicate story, mostly-but-not-quite fitting into DCAU continuity. (It actually stands alone quite well.) Not the best animated feature ever, but decent. Highly recommended if you have Amazon Prime, because then you can stream it for free.
