Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale – Obviously based on 4th Edition, but it’s a single-player action game with limited character customization (compared to the tabletop game) and a less-than-engrossing plot. I suspect the reason I didn’t see much buzz about this game was because it isn’t really worth buzzing about. The quests seemed unexciting and likely to get repetitive, which bodes very poorly if these were the quests they saw fit to include in the free demo. The thing I found most upsetting is that 4E is so very much built around party dynamics and tactical, grid-based combat; this could have been a party-based tactical rpg with the full force of the ruleset behind it, but wasn’t.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe – This was made for fans of the original TV show, just in case you thought it might tie into the newer shows or something. It uses clips from that show as cutscenes, including the entire opening sequence. The demo level is a shoot-em-up played as one of the five lions, which apparently makes up most of the game (and has a multiplayer feature). Voltron is only formed for boss battles, and apparently those are fought as turn-based quicktime sequences, but the demo doesn’t include them. I found it amusing enough to consider buying a used copy if the price dropped enough, but it appears to only be available via download, and I’m certainly not paying PSN full price.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair - A 2D metroidvania designed to show off the power of the 360 and PS3. The map can be displayed in its entirety and you can zoom in and out to various degrees; and it apparently supports online multiplayer. You can only access the menu to change items and equipment at certain points and apparently the different characters (only one is playable in the demo) have different leveling styles. This appears to be a relatively short and heavily DLC-driven game, both factors that make me wince at paying a lot for it. Also, I really can’t see trying to play a lot of it unless I owned Frank’s 2000” TV, which is what you need to see anything if you’re not fully zoomed-in.
