"We have no Fate but the Fate we are given."
The AD&D 2nd supplement Al-Qadim includes that as a proverb, and it was a common theme in Beeto's game freshman year. Fate plays a role in magical effects and game mechanics, and of course it's a great line in a roleplaying game, where the GM is essentially giving your characters their due. It's easy to believe that your fate is influenced less by randomness or your actions when there's a narrator sitting across the table making up the things that happen to you.
I was randomly stuck today by how unlike the real world this is. Yes, things happen that are out of your control. Life sucks sometimes, either through randomness or because someone really is out to screw you over. But the majority of the time, it's your actions that are the determining factor. Very rarely is there a situation that you can't change if you push hard enough.
Here's to thinking outside the box. Here's to yelling until you get your way. Here's to making the world into what you want, instead of sulking. Here's to persistance. Here's to bullheadedness. Here's to courage.
Keep trying until you get the job you want, even if you need to take the job you don't want in order to get there. If you can't find a group of people who do what you want to do, form one. If the system sucks, come up with a better one, then change it. Don't whine: Have a better idea. Be a leader, be confident, be that person who everyone can look at and see that they've got it going on.
And make me read this the next time I decide I'm mopey and helpless.
