Final Fantasy 4: Unprecedented Crisis (full notes log)

Full breakdown of changes:

Cecil has black magic (Poison and Blind) from the start, and also his Dark Wave ability available (though it only works when he's using a dark sword).

I think the Mist Dragon had its weaknesses changed, as Cecil's dark sword was doing a lot more damage than Kain's attacks.

The equipment system has been overhauled, and that the first big change: Rydia equips gloves, and the "ring" items are now equipped as shields. Lots of items are renamed, and there's a new sword for Cecil in Kaipo that isn't dark-aligned. (Cecil also wears generic armor, instead of the Shadow equipment.) Rods and staves can still be used as items in-battle.

Rydia doesn't have white or black magic, and her only starting summon spell is Imp. She instead gets a "Help!" ability, that summons a random esper, but only if you have the MP for it. (She learns Choco at level 5, Shiva at level 10, and eventually all of the summons.) She learns Bomb at Mt. Hobs, instead of Fire.

Tellah's starting spell list is a bit more balanced, but he only has 45 MP. I feel like chests in the watery cave are more generous with Ethers than I remember. Octomamm also seems particularly weak to the dark sword; and dies without losing any tentacles.

Edward regains his ability to split potions, but is otherwise just as spoony as ever. (Actually, no: His Sing command is split into a series of zero-MP buff spells.) Rosa's class is changed to Archer, and her white magic selection is greatly decreased. Her Aim skill becomes "charge". Edward's scene with Anna's ghost doesn't happen.

Yang gains a Chakra skill that recovers his HP, and doesn't start with claws equipped. Fabul has a bunch of new equipment, including FireBombs and Lit-Bolts for sale. Rosa and Rydia fight from the parapets in Fabul, rather than hanging back. There's a new Serpent Road hidden in the Fabul throne room. The scene with the king of Fabul leads straight to the docks, Cecil gets a different sword from the king...and the party successfully sails to Baron!

There are two nameless guards in the Inn who drop the Baron Key, and then you can go straight into the Underground Waterway, where the game's difficulty finally ramps up. (Among other things, the lack of a healer is noteworthy.) Once you get to the castle, you rescue Cid from the jail (he joins you) and go straight to fight Cagnazzo. He drops the Crystal of Water. Baigan then shows up, and plot-dumps that the fiends get their powers from the crystals, and that the crystals are also keys to something. Baigan is left in charge of Baron, and as the new airship isn't ready yet, the party opts to travel through the Misty Mountains.

Cid, for the record, loses Peep but gains Rage, which berserks him.

The party passes through Mist to a new dungeon, the Misty Mountains, which includes a new weapon for Edward and a fight against Scarmiglion at the end. When he's defeated, a scene in Mysidia plays in which Palom and Porom convince the elder to let them go on a diplomatic mission to Baron, but their ship is attacked by Leviathan. They twincast Warp as the ship goes down.

Meanwhile, the party reaches Toria. In Toria castle, the Red Wings attack and Golbez takes down the party with a shadow dragon. Then Tellah arrives and uses Meteo to defeat Golbez. Cecil wakes up in the infirmary, where Edward opts to stay and nurse Tellah back to health. The clerics agree to loan the party the Crystal of Earth.

Unfortunately, then the game hits a big wall of "Now what?" You can get a black chocobo and visit places, but Cecil refuses to enter Mysidia and Mt. Ordeals is blocked. Toria, Agart and Silvera have Serpent Roads now, but they're all blocked at Mysidia's end. There's nothing new in Baron or Fabul. Cave Magnes is inaccessible, as the "magnetic field" message pushes you back.

Someone in Agart says that there are Mythril Mines in an underground spring where you can find a SeaRuby. Also that there's a stone that can levitate anything frozen deep underground.

I didn't think you could reach Eblan via Black Chocobo, but I was wrong: Edge is fighting Rubicant there. Edge joins. Edge has a selection of offensive black magic instead of his Ninja spells. Eblan has random encounters now, and also a new Serpent Road. When you go down to the basement of the right tower, Rubicant is waiting to fight you, and drops the Fire Crystal when you beat him. The passage leads to the Eblan cave, which has a tunnel into the tower of Bab-il. Yang leaves to lead the distraction troops while the party sneaks into the tower. The Tower seems to be using Tower of Zot floor plans, though, and leads to the Magus Sisters fight. Then the party meets Kain, who claims to be a sleeper agent. Cecil runs to rescue Rosa, but it's Barbariccia in disguise! Apparently Rosa tricked her and trapped her there. The party defeats her with Kain's help, and retrieves the Air Crystal. Kain then reveals the crystals open the way to the moon.

Kain gives the party a Tower Key, which lets them unlock a door in the first floor and reach the crystal chamber, where Rosa is waiting. They place the four crystals and try to open the portal to the moon, but nothing happens. Then Golbez arrives and reveals there are eight crystals. He thren drops the party down a trap door to the underworld. Rydia is missing when they awake. The party goes to the dwarf castle and meets Giott.

Giott reveals that the underworld is different from the one we remember: The Bolt crystal is held by them. The Ice crystal is in the mines of Tomra, which is ruled by King Santos. The Shadow crystal is in the Feymarch. The Holy crystal is in the Shrine to Bahamut. He offers the party a crashed airship if they can repair it; and reveals that they found Palom and Porom. Cid then opts to stay and help the dwarves rebuild their tanks, and the kids name the airship the Red Dwarf. Porom has Bonk (which revives a party member) instead of Cry; but you finally have a healer in the party again. She can also equip heavy hammers.

In Tomra, the dwarves discuss the economics of ice mining and how King Santos has changed recently. The sealed cave is completely redone into the Ice Mine--which is clearly a play on the FF1 Ice Cave, including some of the chest monsters. King Santos has been replaced by Alichino, Fiend of Ice. After the battle, the party claims the Ice Crystal and Palom and Porom rescue the real King Santos.

The Cave to the Feymarch is unchanged. In the Feymarch itself, you can find Rydia, who was saved by the Sylphs and is recovering in bed. Leviathan and Ashura are happy to lend Cecil the crystal, but then Ciriatto, Fiend of Shadow, appears to try to claim it. He's a really nasty fight, as his second form/back attack opens with Fallen One. (Also: The rat tail isn't here.)

The Sylph Cave is redone as Bahamut's Lagoon, though it remains full of really annoying, status-effect-inducing encounters. In the center a "Prophet" is claiming the Holy Crystal. Of course, he's really the Holy Fiend, Draghinazzo. Beating him nets the crystal.

The party returns to the Castle, and Cid notes the power of their defenses. Then Edge hears something in the crystal room just as the Red Wings attack, so Cid and Rosa go to help the defense while the party checks on the crystal. Golbez, Kain and Malacoda appear on an airship, ready to warp in. The party defeats the Calbrena doll, but Golbez arrives with Kain. Golbez knocks out the party and takes the crystals, but Kain stabs him in the back and revives everyone. Then Malacoda jumps in. When she's beaten, she warps Golbez away. The party, now with only the Bolt Crystal, decides to mount a counter-offensive to try to get the other seven back.

Return to the Tower of Bab-il: The layout is the same, though the chests are different. The early floors have a new set of equipment for Edge; then chest monsters guard a full set of Genji armor. The tower encompasses both versions of itself, then Dr. Lugae is at the top. Lugae and Balnab each have multiple forms, and Lugae's second one likes to spam Charm. Then then party confront Golbez, who's arranging the crystals. (Even if you win the battle, you're scripted to lose, so he takes the last crystal and places it.) The tower shakes, and Cecil wakes up in the dwarf castle with Cid and Rosa--the tower is sealed, but they have a drill to return to the surface.

They go to Mysidia, where Palom and Porom convince Cecil to meet the Elder. The Elder comments he'll need to become a Paladin to atone, but since the moon is priority one, says they need a Floater Stone to raise the ship from the ocean bottom. Go back to the Ice Mines, and Santos will give you one. Then the elder raises the Lunar Whale, but tells you the barrier is removed from Mt. Ordeals and that there are friends around the world who need your help, first.

On Mt. Ordeals, a disembodied voice forces Cecil to fight undead by himself (just equip a non-dark sword, like the Icebrand, and you'll be fine). The mirror battle is as usual, but then you need to fight the DarkMist Dragon with your full party. (It absorbs Holy, irritatingly.)

Entering the Serpent Road thrusts you into battle with an EvilWall, then removes Palom and Porom from your party. The Serpent Road can then transport you to any town in the overworld, though I'm not sure of its utility, because you have to fight Trap Doors to reach each teleporter, and you have an airship outside anyway.

Damcyan: If you go to the underground treasure room, there's a new stairway that leads to the Serpent Road and a room where Edward is mourning Anna. If you defeat the ghost of "Anna?", then Edward will recieve his Requim Harp and join you. His Split ability is replaced with Regen.

Baron: Cid's assistants will give you a new airship with a hovercraft hook. In the right tower basement, you can fight the king's ghost/Odin for the Excalibur.

Fabul: The king was poisoned, and Yang went looking for a SeaRuby to heal him. If you use the hovercraft to reach the mithril mine, there's a new dungeon there. Even if you don't want Yang, the dungeon has the Muramasa, the Thor Hammer, the Blood Harp, the Slasher Axe and the Triton Knife. When you take the SeaRuby back to Fabul, the King gives you the Save the Queen Sword (which is very inferior to the Excalubir), and Yang's Wife gives you the Cleaver (Spoon).

Eblan Cave: You can use the hovercraft to reach here, which has Giant of Bab-il enemies...because it leads into the Giant! Treasures here include the Defender, a Yoichi Bow, and a Gungnir Spear. Dr. Lugae appears at the end; Edge chases him while the party fights the CPU. Lugae escapes, and Edge leaves the party to rejoin his people when you complete the dungeon.

Toria: Tellah is missing from his bed. He's in Cave Magnes, and will join you at the entrance. He joins at a pitifully low level and doesn't learn any new spells, but he at least gains MP when he levels up. Treasures: Fairy Rod, Wooden Shield, Wooden Hammer, Venom Axe. At the end, you fight a Dark Elf (no scene, no second form, just a fight against him without your metal gear), and Tellah finds a tome that teaches him all spells.

Dwarf Castle: If you come with the TARDIS (Enterprise), Cid will offer to join. A Red Wings ship will give chase, and you'll have to fight the Ship's AI bonus boss.

Feymarch: If you go to Rydia's bedtime, she'll have to solo battle through a series of her traumatic events, but it's relatively straightforward. She joins, still as a child and with only Summon magic.

Didn't find anything new in: Kaipo, Mithril, Mist, Tomra.

When you go to the moon, there doesn't seem to be a special scene the first time. The Hummingways don't have a store.

Cave Bahamut has a full set of Dragon armor for Kain. Encounters are standard, but there are no spiked behemoth fights. If you approach Bahamut, Kain has to fight a solo battle against him, and then leaves the party to become his apprentice.

The Lunar Path contains monster chests that have an Apollo Harp, a Murasame and a Holy Spear.

When you enter the palace, Golbez sets a revolving fight of all eight fiends on you. Then he tries to use the Shadow Dragon, but Kain leaps in just long enough to take it out. Each party member gets a line as you rush in to fight Golbez. That fight isn't anything special. But then Zeromus appears, feasting on Golbez's hatred. Apparently he was exiled into deep space via this asteroid. He threatens to destroy the world and will await the party at the core.

The Lunar Crystals all get (amusing) names. The Hummingway store is now just inside the core. Left path: Seraphim cane, then fight Palm Dim for the Crystal Mail. Right path: Thief Gloves. Main path: The Masamune and a Dragon shield are in unguarded chests. B3 has another full suit of Dragon equipment. B4: Yoichi arrows, Elixir, two X-Potions, and a behemoth fight for the Stardust Rod. B5: Blue-D/Red-D fight for a Rune Axe; Mirage Shirt; behemoth fight for the Loki Harp; double Red-D fight for the Firey Hammer; Robe of Lords; D.Fossil/Warlock fight for the Strength glove; Cabin. B6: Protect Ring, Yaygu star, Cabin; fight behemoth for a Dragon spear. Across the invisible bridge: Phoenix; behemoth fight for Artemis bow; fight Wyvern for the Lightbringer sword. B7: Fight Plague for the Crystal helmet; fight two Luner Dragons for the Crystal glove and two Ribbons. Lunar Core: Protect ring, fight Ogopogo for the Crystal shield; Elixir; Mirage shirt, Robe of Lords, Strength glove. Also of note, you can run from encounters in the Lunar Core, which I believe you can't in the original. There's a new save point right at the end.

Zeromus knocks down the party, but [Paladin] Cecil shines a light that restores them and reveals Zeromus' true form. When he's defeated, he vows he'll return. Each character gets an ending line. There's an ending crawl over the solar system, then each character gets a scene: Kain training with Bahamut; the twins visiting Santos, and having him bring a new doll to Luca; Tellah retrieving Edward from Anna's grave to rebuild Damcyan; Yang and Rydia restoring the passageway to Mist; Edge chasing girls in Eblan; Rosa fretting in Baron; Cid and his assistants in a ship; the Red Wings returning to Baron; Cecil and Rosa's wedding. Then the characters restore the crystals to their rightful homes.

Things I missed: I don't know where you get Rosa back. I didn't test beating the game with other party compositions. I don't know if you can get FuSoYa at all / if there's another bonus character. I couldn't figure out where to find adamant ore for Kokkol the Smith.
