Retro RPG Puzzle FAQ/Walkthrough

“Retro RPG Puzzle (quest) is a tile based minimalistic RPG. The goal is to simply make it from one door to the next. You click on adjacent tiles to move your player. Choose your tiles carefully because there are some tiles that hurt you and some tiles that help you. The game is simple, but it will challenge your puzzle skills. Like any good retro RPG, you may level up and improve your stats along the way. This retro roguelike is true to its name and one death will send you back to the start screen.”

General Strategies:
In general, you need to kill enough things in the early floors to build up your levels to the point you can survive a bad draw in the higher levels: You may eventually be forced to cross a row of wolves or spikes, and you need enough Health to get through that or it’s game over. This means it’s not enough to just get through a level, you need to grind by killing everything you’re reasonably able to and pick up as many chests as possible.

Magic tiles deal Magic x2, so even playing as the Mage, you don’t need a high Magic score until floor 20 (13 to kill Demons, 18 to kill Worms, then 19 by floor 35 to kill Wolves). If you’re lucky, you can get a lot of that from chests.
If you don’t have a high enough Attack to kill something in a single hit, you’ll both take a second shot. This is survivable with the early high-HP enemies like Demons and Worms, but gets dangerous with Wolves and Crocs, and deadly with Dragons.

Characters:
Mage: More likely to draw magic tiles
Storm: Reach floor 50 with mage to unlock – This adds “storm” tiles to the board, which hit every enemy tile with a magic attack (equal to your Magic score).
Strategy: Try to touch as many magic tiles as possible to wipe out large numbers of foes. Your Magic score doesn’t need to be super-high (13 to kill Demons, 18 to kill Worms, then 19 by floor 35 to kill Wolves), so focus more on Health and some Attack. Unlocking Arrow Bolt with the Archer makes this class significantly easier.

Rogue: More likely to draw treasure tiles
Master Key: Reach floor 50 with rogue to unlock – This adds “master key” tiles to the board, which are worth 3 keys each.
Strategy: Treasure chests are your big advantage, as each one is worth three levels. Take riskier paths to get as many keys as you can early on, because you can’t cross chest tiles if you can’t open them. When you can beat monsters without much risk, clear them out. You need everything you can get to survive later levels on pure strength.

Warrior: More likely to draw health tiles
Full Heal: Reach floor 50 with warrior to unlock
Strategy: Kill things and heal as necessary. It’s very tempting to just speed through levels only touching healing tiles. Don’t do that.

Archer: Has the ability to attack adjacent tiles – This deals damage as some fraction of your Attack score, but the exact amount is unclear.
Arrow Bolt: Reach floor 50 with archer to unlock – This adds the “magic arrow” tiles to the board, which shoots a magic shot across the screen in four cardinal directions.
Strategy: Kill as many things with indirect attacks as possible, particularly the high-attack, low-life targets like Snakes, Hydras, Ticks and Imps.

Vampire: Gain life after each attack – This appears to be related to your overall stats, but how is unclear.
Revive: Reach Floor 50 with vampire to unlock – This gives your character the “Revive” ability, which lets you recover from a negative life value once per game.
Strategy: Most lower-attack enemies can’t hurt you at all, so clear them all out whenever possible and look for “bridges” of them through the more dangerous targets.
