Quick mini-reviews

Iron Man 3 – Better than Iron Man 2, with much better character development and a stronger story arc. Liked what they did with the Mandarin. Also thought the treatment of Pepper and Rhody was good. Perhaps a little on the long side; and that was after they underplayed the interesting new suits in favor of showing off Tony as himself, which was good and bad. It’ll be interesting to see Stark’s role in Avengers 2.

Dodger, by Terry Pratchett – Not his greatest work ever, but solid. Historical fiction in which the artful dodger meets Charlie Dickens and a host of other personages real and imagined, including the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Hangs together well, has some cute bits, and could really use an infographic of British pre-decimal currency.

Ragnarok DS - Stylus-controlled action-rpg, featuring a fairly standard set of jrpg protagonists (He has daddy issues and a giant sword; she has amnesia and mysterious magic powers) in a fairly standard set of jrpg quests. Apparently it’s designed to be a pared-down, offline version of the MMORPG Ragnarok Online. The control scheme reminds me a bit of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, though a little clunkier. I’m not enthused.

Spectral Force - Genesis - Does anybody else remember the old SNES game Gemfire? It’s a board-game-style war game, where you build up your army in your province and slowly conquest the other provinces. The Dynasty Warriors Empires games did something similar, albeit you conquered provinces by playing beat-em-up Dynasty Warriors stages. Anyways, that’s what this is. In a fantasy world, you have control of one of several small kingdoms and you need to build up your army and ally with or conquer all of your neighbors. You recruit generals and send them to do your bidding, and they seem to have something resembling personalities, but I wasn’t really able to glean an actual storyline from the segment I played. Vaguely interesting, but not a genre that's usually my cup of tea.
