Hmm. Yum?

I've just been alerted to the existance of Bacon Vodka. My first thought, of course, was, "Dude!" My second thought was "...but what would you do with it?"

I mean, you could drink it straight, but bacon-flavor or not, it's still vodka. I don't drink fruit-flavored vodkas straight, because no matter how delicious the fruit is, they still taste like vodka (that is, they taste like burning). The first recipe suggested on that site is usnig it in a bloody mary, which would be great except for the fact that bloody marys are vile.

The steak marinade is an interesting idea, and I'd be interested to see what effect using vodka instead of vinegar has on a steak. But that also isn't worthy of buying an extra bottle of vodka for--just add a couple crumbled slices of bacon (or some bacon salt) to the marinade.

So that leaves the chocolate-and-bacon drinks. Which may be a valid idea. After all, chocolate-covered bacon and bacon-chip cookies work nicely. But am I really curious enough to find a way to mail-order the stuff from the northwest?

Chocolate and bacon isn't bad, but I'd think other sweet flavors would work even better--say, a caramel, butterscotch, or maple liqueur. Here's a suggestion:

Maple Bacontini:

1.5 oz bacon vodka
1.5 oz maple liqueur
Shake with ice and strain into martini glass; drizzle with caramel sauce (optional).

On a related note, I discovered over the weekend that the best all-around homemade drink for simplicity, price, alcohol content, and flavor is bourbon and simple syrup; essentially, a mint julep without the mint. Doesn't require me to keep any special mixers around, which is nice.

Or one other thought:

2.5 oz bacon vodka
.5-1 oz brown simple syrup (simple syrup made with brown sugar)

Okay, if Bacon Vodka makes it to this side of the country (or, say, esprit_du_tigre or hyouneko brings some over), we must have a bacon cocktail party. But I'm too skeptical, I think, to go out of my way for it.

[identity profile] edgehopper.livejournal.com 2009-06-22 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
After coming up with those recipes, I may just order a bottle online.

You know it's pretty easy to infuse vodkas... I bet you could MAKE bacon vodka. Just like Skittles vodka!

the best all-around homemade drink for simplicity, price, alcohol content, and flavor

The only problem is that it requires liking bourbon. I think, if I were going to choose a very simple, cheap, highly alcoholic yet tasty beverage, I'd say a 50/50 mix of nice dark rum (like the Nassau Liquor we got in the Bahamas, which you should try the next time you're over if you haven't) and cranberry juice.

[identity profile] edgehopper.livejournal.com 2009-06-22 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Straight bourbon is much less tasty than sweetened bourbon--I can't drink bourbon straight. You might like this, with the simple syrup on the high end.

Cranberry juice doesn't work as well for me; you've got to buy it specifically for the drink, because I don't usually drink cranberry juice by itself. Sugar, on the other hand, is a kitchen staple :)

But what *I* want to know is, is it kosher?? (I.e., like Bac-O's and bacon salt? Or is it flavored with actual real pig flesh?)

Honestly, I think we've finally tripped my "too far" meter on bacon. I was with you on the bacon apple pie, I got won over on the cookies, but I think the cocktail may finally be too much.

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-22 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, even I'm a little skeptical, here.

Penne alla bacon vodka?

[identity profile] superjan42.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
that's exactly what i was going to suggest. it could actually be good...

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, there aren't many recipes where bacon and cooked tomatoes go together. I'm not entirely sure how well that combination would work. The other thing is, I'm not sure which flavors from the bacon end up in the vodka: Salty? Smoky? Meaty? I'd need to taste it and contemplate before I think I'd want to cook with it.

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm...penne alla vodka with bacon in it? Interesting. I usually add italian sausage to the standard Joy of Cooking version, but this is an interesting idea, with or without BAKON.

also - ben found some sort of fancy bacon chocolate recently. it's like $10 a bar. he's been wanting to get it for himself, but deciding it's too expensive. he just said "should we send some to chuck?" he must like you.

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww! I'm touched.

[identity profile] lithoglyphic.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And nobody's mentioned the possibility of a Bacony Bloody Mary yet? That seems obvious to me.

[identity profile] lithoglyphic.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm sorry, I totally didn't read the whole post like I thought I did. Oops. :-P

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you actually like bloody marys? If so...why?

[identity profile] superjan42.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
i actually really do.

[identity profile] lithoglyphic.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually know. I've actually never had one. Mostly because I don't know who I'd trust to make one.

Nominally, I like all the stuff that goes into them, and believe tomatoes can do no wrong. However, V8 is the exception to my tomato rule and I'm concerned that Bloody Marys might be similar. Shudder.

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2009-06-24 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There are very few foods I actively dislike the taste of, and tomato juice is one of them. Adding tobasco and vodka doesn't seem like it would improve matters any.

:)

lol, dude...haven't used LJ in ages, but when I googled "bacontini" this post popped right up! I'm not entirely sure I even remember my password. Here's hoping this works.

Maple bacontinis have been made, as far as I'm aware, with maple-infused vodka...but I see no reason why you can't make them with a mix of the two, or even with just Bakon. For an added touch of class, rim the glass in syrup and coat with fresh bacon bits, and/or use a maple-candied strip of bacon as a garnish in the glass. (Since this is a ridiculous bacon extravagance, I'm going to have to go with "and.")

If you are doing anything remotely like this, please to invite me over, please ;)

On that topic: I never heard back from you or your husband about 4th of July weekend--are you free that Friday (7/3)? I can't promise bacontinis, but...

You know what I did? I THOUGHT about replying and believed I had done so.

In my imagined reply, I said, "Yes, please come on down! Let's do a thing! Don't know what, but we can easily figure something out!"
