Lyrics meme

Let's all do the lyrics meme, the lyrics meme, the lyrics meme. Let's take turn and lyrics together, the lyrics meme!

Put your MP3 player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

Jethrien suggested I use the entire collection. Can you guess any of these?

"I Can't Get No Satisfaction"

Can you not hear me anymore?
Hava Nagila! Hava Nagila! Hava Nagila!
It's a bad day,
A little ditty about Jack and Diane.

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait,
I saw an open book, and I looked inside it,
Everybody's telling all, baring their souls,
No no, no no, boy.

Fashion always changes from place to place
One night, yeah, one town,
Clouds so swift, the rain fallin' in
If you have a color to shine.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
Somewhere, in burst of glory
Who do you think you are?
They pulled in just behind the bridge.

Oh Johnny and Jane, they were the perfect married couple
Secure yourself to heaven, hold on tight the night has come
Put on the skillet, put on the lid
Here we all go now to that east side.

Line 4 - "Ballad of Jack and Diane" - John (possibly Cougar) Mellancamp
Line 5 - "Only the Good Die Young" - Billy Joel
Line 16 - "Amazing Grace" - it could be anyone

...and that's it. Poor showing on my part, I'm afraid.

[identity profile] maydove.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Line 2: "Hava Nagila" by...I don't know, but I'm guessing it's being played by a klezmer band
Line 15: "Will You Light My Candle" from Rent? "Who do you think you are? Barging in on me and my guitar..."
Line 18: "Secure Yourself" by...I don't know, but it's on the Wildcats CD!

[identity profile] chuckro.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
#15 is actually a Lisa Loeb song, but you're right, it could have just as easily have been from Rent, given what you had to go on.

"Secure Yourself" is by the Indigo Girls.

What is "I Can't Get No Satisfaction"?

Also
2 - Hava Nagila
5 - Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel
13 - Amazing Grace (duh)
18 - Secure Yourself - Indigo Girls (I'm guessing Wildcats cover)
20 - Southside - Brown Derbies cover of I don't know who (?)

And I know I know 4, but I keep thinking it's "Take the Money and Run" by SMB, even though I know it isn't.

Aren't you glad I didn't do guess on me? You'd have been screeeeewed.

"Secure Yourself" is the original. We both like the Indigo Girls, and own a couple albums.

Southside was actually the Richard Cheese cover, but I believe we've got the Derbies version, too.

Richard Cheese? It's amazing how many covers we all have of things...

I don't keep my own livejournal, but let's see. I used itunes instead of my ipod because it has all the same music, give or take, and I'm lazy.

"When we met light was shed"

Hanging out behind the club on the weekend,
Today is gonna be the day,
All those Saturdays, when kids go out and play
Has our conscience shown?

Left uninspired by the crust of railroad earth,
8 o'clock Monday night and I'm waiting,
Brainstorm, take me away from the norm,
It's been a while.

Possessions never meant anything to me,
Are these times contagious,
And it takes more time than I've ever had,
Karma police, arrest this girl.

Meet me in outer space,
I've been waiting a long time,
I think I've already lost you,
We started out so brand new, darling.

It works surprisingly well! I am also depressingly trendy.

#1 is Blink-182, don't remember the song title.
#2 is Wonderwall by Oasis.
#12 is Karma Police, which I only know as the Brown Derbies cover.
#15 is "If You're Gone" by Matchbox 20.
#16 is "Angel Without Wings" by Vertical Horizon.

I figured you'd get the first four and possibly third eye blind in the title. I'm always surprised when people recognize that vertical horizon song.

3 - Click Click Boom, Saliva
4 - The World I Know, Collective Soul
5 - Title Track, Death Cab for Cutie
6 - Girl All the Bad Guys Want, Bowling for Soup
7 - Amber, 311
8 - It's Been a While (hah), Staind
9 - Linoleum, NoFX
10 - Run, Collective Soul
11 - Best I've Ever Had, Straylight Run
12 - Radiohead was the original
13 - Stellar, Incubus
14 - Waiting, Green Day

I like Vertical Horizon quite a lot. You might remember, they wrote the song that I did my first dance with my wife to.

I don't feel too bad about not getting the others. #6 is the only one among them that's actually in my collection.

[identity profile] oblvndrgn.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And you also have at least one cover of that song!

I should give you some Straylight Run. They're one of my favorite tiny bands, if only because one of their songs -Your Name Here- has this for the chorus:

Go east on Sunrise Highway,
Turn left at Carman's Avenue,
Go right at the first stoplight,
And I'll be outside waiting for you,
Oh, I'll be waiting for you,

Two guesses where they're from! Their fairly well received single was Existentialism on Prom Night which I'm sure you can find on youtube if you're bored. I love inappropriate piano. I rather guess the band in general (and that song especially) might be a bit too emo for your tastes though.

I love Vertical Horizon. I have one of their earlier (earliest?) CD's, the one with "On the Sea." I didn't know your first dance song was by them! I liked it but didn't recognize it.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Famous", from Running on Ice, my favorite Vertical Horizon album. We'd considered trying to do some song that was more stylish to dance to, but kept coming back to the fact that that one's "our" song. So i finally stopped fighting - and lo and behold, turns out we could dance to it after all.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Fighting it, not fighting each other.

[identity profile] jethrien.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The Vertical Horizon song was actually the only one I recognized from the first line.
