Movies I’ve Watched (catching up before year-end)

Ant-Man and The Wasp – Fun, a bit goofier than some others. I was a bit concerned with how they would fill the second half when it looked like they were ready to rescue Janet right away. (Also, after all the problems with Janet Van Dyne being written out of the first movie, bringing her back as the genius who survived decades in the quantum realm and played by Hollywood Superhero Royalty Michelle Pfeiffer is a very good apology.) I wonder, given the teaser, if they weren’t sure whether they were using Ant-Man in Endgame, so they wanted to give an excuse either way.

Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet - This was fun, though all the best bits were the extremely meta, aimed-at-adults ones. I loved the Princesses bit (and the fact they got most of the original VAs for them). Jethrien was amused but the fact that, excepting Ralph himself, every character who accomplishes anything is female, and that’s not remarked upon or in any way treated as unusual. I also appreciate Alan Tudyk getting a minor new role despite his character dying in the last film; I approve of anything that gets him a paycheck.

Gone Girl - I’ve had this sitting on the shelf for two years and remembered it while cleaning out my to-watch list. It’s an excellent adaptation of an excellent mindscrew novel, though I think I’d argue that the novel was still better. (Amy’s parents and their subplots get kind of sidelined in this.) No spoilers if you haven’t seen/read it.

The Incredibles 2 - Fun, though not as strong as the first movie. The plot beats are entirely predictable (and many of them repetitive from the first movie), though I give credit for Bob’s strenuous attempts to not be a remnant of the sitcom 1950s. (And I feel his exhaustion—toddlers are exhausting even when they don’t have superpowers.) Voyd was clearly an author favorite and deserves a spin-off movie where Elastigirl mentors her.
