There Were Apparently Some Movies I Wanted to Watch

Jethrien watched a ton of movies on flights back and forth to Australia, and apparently I felt the need to catch up on all of the recent stuff I wanted to see.

Pitch Perfect 3 - Three years after graduation, the former members of the Bellas are feeling worn-out and like they’re going nowhere with their lives, so they take advantage of a USO show to stage a reunion tour. This movie didn’t really need to be made, but clearly everyone involved was having a lot of fun, so whatever. Anna Kendrick sings, Rebel Wilson kicks ass, Brittany Snow queerbaits, Anna Camp does one-arm pushups…it’s everything you would have wanted and expected from this movie, really.

The Disaster Artist - I think this does an excellent job of portraying exactly what a bizarre person Tommy Wiseau is, and I’m going to guess it grew out of James Franco doing his Wiseau impression for Seth Rogan at a party. And I’m sure the actual production was even more insane than what we see on camera here—I get the impression from reading other reviews that the movie left out some of Wiseau’s more erratic behavior and toned down his fights with the production staff to make him more sympathetic.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - Okay, so, this is worth it for The Rock, though the other three in-game characters are also pretty excellent. It’s fun, it’s funny, and they abuse a 1996 game’s respawn physics in multiple places. I liked it! (Also, the ending was totally predictable if you’d seen the original Jumanji, which I had.)

The Shape of Water - Beautiful. Heavy-handed. Quintessential Del Toro.

Megamind - I’m not sure what reminded me that I’d never seen this, but it was adorable. ARR enjoyed the silliness; I thought there was some nicely-timed wit to go with the standard supervillain pastiche.

Get Out - I'm not usually a horror movie fan, though I appreciate that this is very psychological horror and not so much with the jumpscares. (I'm probably a bit too white to really get it, though on a social anxiety / loss of control scale I do.) I appreciate that they were able to keep a humorous character working well through the entire film, and also give them credit for getting around the cell phone problem in a perfectly logical way. And I'm glad the ending was what it was, because I was totally expecting something bleaker and I was much happier with this.
