"When I was a child, my planet Krypton was dying. I was sent to Earth to protect my cousin. But my pod got knocked off-course and by the time I got here, my cousin had already grown up and become... Superman. I hid who I really was until one day when an accident forced me to reveal myself to the world. To most people, I'm a reporter at CatCo Worldwide Media. But in secret, I work with my adoptive sister for the D.E.O. to protect my city from alien life and anyone else that means to cause it harm. I am Supergirl."

The first two episodes revise our status quo: Cat is leaving; Jimmy is taking her job. Wynn is moving full-time to the DEO. Kara is trying to become a reporter under new hire Snapper Carr. Lena Luthor is introduced to be taking over her brother's company while he's in prison; the heads of Cadmus are elevated to full “big bad” status. And Superman is finally given a face and a voice, and like so many things in this show, he's adorable. Gigantic dork, very down-to-earth, exactly the tone we need in this sort of series. (Also, such a wonderful contrast to grimdark movie Superman.)

I like the “new sincerity” style. Yes, it's cheesy, but I genuinely enjoy the bright, cheerful and non-cynical reaction to horrible things happening. “This sucks, lets fix it.”

The political references are...a bit on the blunt side. I mean, I agree with their political stance and that some anvils need to be dropped, but they are blatant. Multiple villains call Kara a “nasty woman”. Several aliens turn out to be refugees from war-torn planets and there's an entire plot about giving them amnesty and citizenship. Mon-el's parents are monarchs and get to debate him on the merits of extreme wealth dichotomy in a society. And then a fashion challenged fascist claims they’ll “make our planet great again.”

For those of you who heard that lesbian Maggie Sawyer is introduced as a love interest for Kara's sister Alex: Yep. Alex comes out, freaks out, and generally is adorable. Actually, they add new contrasts / love interests for a lot of the characters. Max Lord is out, Lena Luthor (and Mama Luthor as the head of Cadmus) is in. M'gann M'orzz (Miss Martian) is introduced as a foil / love interest for J'onn. Mon-el becomes a regular as Kara's new love interest. James and Wynn have bromantic comedy shenanigans fighting crime, and Wynn eventually gets a recurring alien girlfriend.

I give them credit for not dragging out reveals for more than a week or two. Heck, Lillian Luthor is exposed for running Cadmus a third of the way into the season. Arguably, while the Mon-el story is the season's “real” arc, the season plays as a series of interwoven individual plotlines rather than a single thrust versus a single problem/big bad, and I'm okay with that.

The fact that Daxamites are not as strong as Kryptonians is established early and works well, I think. They can throw punches around, but when it comes down to it, Kara can kick Mon-el's ass; and that is important for maintaining her status as the main character and primary hero of the show. (If nothing else, the classic Daxamite allergy to lead is, rather than “the trace lead in the atmosphere will slowly kill me so I need a formula to counteract it”, manifested as not being bulletproof despite being super-tough, and at risk of dying if a bullet stays in their system.) Mon-el is less on even terms with Supergirl and more in the league of James in the Guardian suit.

Lena's relationship with Kara reminds me so much of Clark/Lex in Smallville that it can't be a coincidence. The fact that 90% of Lena's mannerisms read as flirting may also play a role in that.

Oh, and Kat Grant did know that Kara was Supergirl. Hah!

Overall: I realize that there are lots of people—even in my own family—who think this show is stupid and does things terribly and blah blah blah. But I like it. It’s fun, it’s positive, I enjoy watching it. I eagerly await season 3.
